The Chair of UBC’s Board of Governors has broken his silence, amidst the growing scandal that has followed the departure of the university’s new president, just one year into a five-year term.
John Montalbano has issued a statement, thanking the Board of Governors for their confidence in him, despite allegations he interfered in a professor’s academic freedom.
Jennifer Berdahl claims Montalbano called to admonish her after reading her blog that asked if Arvind Gupta had lost a masculinity contest.
But Montalbano says he asked Berdahl – who he calls a trusted colleague – whether it was okay to discuss her blog post, specifically asking if it compromised her academic freedom.
He insists, she had no problems at the time.
Montalbano is also pledging to fully cooperate in a formal grievance process, available to Berdahl.
