Dozens of ball hockey players are taking to Granville Street in Downtown Vancouver for much of Saturday to help the Vancouver Food Bank.
Five Hole for Food is a cross country road trip that invites different communities to join in a game of drop in ball hockey.
The organization’s creator, Richard Loat, says anyone can join in the game, as long as they bring a non-perishable item of food.
“Christmas and Thanksgiving the Food Bank gets so much support…but in the summer months there’s this big gap where there is increased demand but a reduced amount of contributions. So the fact that we are able to fill that gap by using hockey I think is a win-win.”
He says the event is a way to keep those food supplies coming.
“Last year was a very big year for us. We raised…we hit a big milestone, we raised our one millionth pound of food across Canada. Going on this tour again..a lot to build on but we’ve raised more food and things seem to keep going.”
Ball hockey rinks will be set up until 6:00 pm Saturday.
