While cooler, wetter weather in some areas over the weekend gave firefighters a bit of a break, BC’s wildfire battles this season are far from over.
Fire Information Officer Navi Saini says we now have 221 wildfires across the province with 13 new fires sparked Sunday mainly from lightning.
“All of these fires did remain spot size and still in the initial attack stage. Good news is today a lot of those fires are already out.”
About 25-hundred staff and contractors are on the ground.
So far this season, we’ve had nearly 11-hundred fires compared to 477 fires by this point last year.
The total cost has topped $108 million.
Last year at this time, it was slightly more than $44 million.
There are still 21 active fires of note including eight with evacuation orders or alerts in place.
