The Western Canada Marine Response Corporation is cleaning up a Northeastern BC shoreline this morning after an abandoned fuel pipe leaked an unknown amount of bunker fuel.
Prince Rupert Port Authority spokesperson Michael Gurney says terminal staff spotted an oily sheen near the tideline Sunday morning and quickly alerted officials who contained the leak and will now focus on clean up.
“The questions of whose pipe it is and where the oil is ultimately coming from has yet to be determined.”
The pipe passes under port property and ends next to the marine berth at the Westview Wood Pellet Terminal.
He says only a small quantity of oil escaped and it’s believed to pose minimal risk to marine life and vegetation, although an environmental consultant will investigate.
