When is a school closure not a school closure?
An East Vancouver school annex will shut down to students this fall, but the District insists it’s not an “official” school closure.
It appears to be the first Vancouver school closure, after an external report released by the province earlier this month called for 19 of them.
Maquinna Annex has seen declining enrollment – 109 students in 2008 and just 29 students this year.
Superintendent Scott Robinson says the remaining families at the school at East 4th and Renfrew, all voluntarily decided to register at the main school just several blocks away after being approached by district staff.
The school’s budget will be transferred to Chief Maquinna Elementary.
No plans yet about how the annex building will be used, but the report notes this isn’t an “official” school “closure” under the School Act.
