Christy Clark is shutting down the Burrard Street Bridge in both directions on Sunday, June 21st.
The Premier announced today it will be closed for International Yoga Day from 4am to 11am.
“It’s an early morning on Sunday, so hopefully, the inconvenience will be minimized. It’s a busy bridge and I think it makes a really wonderful statement. Close it to all that busy-ness and welcome a thousand, couple thousand, many thousand people to be present and reflective. It’s the exact opposite of busy traffic.”
Clark is citing a recent strengthening of economic and cultural ties with India as reasons for the event.
The event titled ‘Om The Bridge’ coincides with International Yoga Day.
“We want to livestream that picture around the world and what better view can you get of this magnificent city and this magnificent province than an aerial shot looking down at the Burrard Street Bridge to thousands of people doing yoga on it. It will put in context the yoga and who we are.”
At the event this afternoon, the Premier refused to elaborate on the B.C. Health Ministry’s firing scandal where eight health researchers were fired in 2012.
Clark would only say her government ‘made a mistake’ and she has ‘apologized’.
