The federal government’s plans to spend 40-million dollars on a new coast guard base in Newfoundland has local stakeholders again asking… why not re-open Vancouver’s only base?
“The Kitsilano Coast Guard base…the amount of money that they are going to save, is probably equivalent to what they’re going to pay for office furniture in the new building in St. John’s.”
Unifor’s Allan Hughes says the West Coast seems to be suffering at the expense of boosting facilities on the east coast.
“Meanwhile on the BC coast we’re continuing to close stations, and reduce the number of boots on the ground and people monitoring shipping, when we handle half the shipping in Canada.”
Hughes also questions whether new promises are being made because it’s an election year.
