The breath-taking nature surrounding Vancouver is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for some women living in the downtown east side, simply enjoying nature can be life changing.
Forest and the Femme is a volunteer run organization, that takes women living in the downtown east side on hikes, picnics, and outdoor adventures.
Program coordinator Jaime Adams says this contact with nature helps them gain self esteem and confidence.
“There are real gaps for women living in the Downtown East Side. I wanted them to have something. My sort of fruition for that was access to the outdoors. I wanted to be able to share that with them.”
“It sort of changes their narrative from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I want to’ you really see something in them change, the way they see themselves. I think it’s just incredible.”
Adams has started a go fund me campaign to raise money to buy a safe and reliable van to bring these women on more adventures around the lower mainland.
