Advocates for more surgical beds at Delta Hospital say they’re making headway as they circulate a petition with more than 11,000 signatures.
After a public meeting Saturday drew doctors and Delta’s acting mayor and MLA, Friends of Delta Hospital’s Nicholas Wong says he’s seeing progress.
He says he’s particularly heartened by how many have signed a petition for surgical facilities.
“Eleven thousand. In terms of the population of Delta that’s over 10 percent of the entire population.”
Wong says that’s made an impression; he says Health minister Terry Lake has now agreed to a meeting with key doctors and the Fraser Health Authority.
“So the minister is going to meet with the CEO of Fraser Health and Dr. Shaw of the Delta Hospital Medical Health Association and a few other people at a small meeting when he comes to Vancouver in the middle of May.”
Last Fall, Delta doctors signed a letter pointing out service gaps at the hospital, particularly the lack of surgical beds on evenings and weekends.
Advocates say they worry those gaps are putting lives at risk.
