A medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health says while many parents are getting their kids vaccinated, they’re also seeing a frustrating trend of cherry picking – giving them some shots and not others.
Dr. Meena Dawar says there is solid science behind the vaccination schedule for children to ensure they are protected when they need it most.
She says parents mistakenly think they ARE protecting their kids, but they’re actually taking a chance.
“For example, in our last cluster of measles cases, a child was infected at the airport. We know that there was this outbreak at Disneyland, so you don’t have to go far from home to be exposed to these infections.”
Dawar is asking parents to talk with their health care provider before picking and choosing vaccines for their kids.
Recent data from Vancouver Coastal Health says vaccination rates are too low in many parts of the region.
