What do you want to see from the Canucks this summer? I want to see big changes.
The only way to get this team into contender mode is to rebuild. When you look at any team left in the Stanley Cup Playoffs right now, what do you see?
You see depth at forward, a mobile defence, and solid goaltending.
Right now the Canucks only have one of those boxes checked; solid goaltending, and the goaltending will be compromised if you don’t have a solid mobile defense. That will take time to draft or to acquire through trade. The Canucks have pieces up front that they can move now to help with this situation and will need to do so. That may include moving some of their prized, young assets, which will fetch top dollar if properly pedalled.
General Manager Jim Benning loves the draft and loves developing players, he knows that this is the way to build a long term and sustainable core that will perennially compete.
This cycle is over, and any thought of taking another run at any kind of post season glory next year only takes away from the mission that needs to be taken on.
That mission is to rebuild everything…including the Sedins.
Say what you want about brand loyalty, there is no bigger chip that the Canucks have right now than the Sedins. Two players who can give a team what they need, consistent scoring, leadership and playoff experience. How many teams that are close to the title wouldn’t want the Sedins? St. Louis would give their eye teeth for the duo and that might be the best way to effect a rebuild.
Anyone who suggests that the Canucks need to keep Daniel and Henrik are living in wonderland. This is a business. It is about winning, and the only way to do that is to build the team the way it needs to be built.
And that requires big moves…and bold moves. None would be bolder or more decisive than trading Daniel and Henrik and restocking the cupboard for years…
