Vancouver’s new police chief has spoken at his first news conference Friday morning, saying his priority will be to spend more time in the community.
“I want to … get out and have some more face time with frontline patrol officers and listen to what our people on the streets are having to say.”
Deputy Chief Adam Palmer is replacing Jim Chu after a nationwide search determined he is the best replacement with 28 years’ experience.
“We’ll make decisions based on all the facts and we will be open with the public.”
He admits he has big shoes to fill: “Jim Chu has been a very good mentor to me, so I’m not planning on any drastic changes. Right now, I like the course we’re on.”
Palmer is expected to take over in a few weeks.
Chu has not said what he plans to do next, but there’s speculation his new career may be in politics.
