It was set for demolition, but an abandoned building in East Vancouver is coming down early after being destroyed by an early morning fire.
The blaze at the warehouse on Campbell at Hastings was reported just after two this morning.
Vancouver Fire Assistant Chief Ron Coulson says when crews arrived, two people were hanging from one of the windows.
He says they were rescued with help from Vancouver Police.
“We are not sure exactly what the role was in the building, but it was an abandoned strucure slated for demolition, so we’re assuming they were probably squatting in the structure.”
There are unconfirmed reports that two other people were also in the building.
It’s unclear what caused the fire – but an investigation is now underway.
One man, who manages a warehouse not too far from the fire says the building has had a problem with thieves.
“There’s been guys breaking in at night to steal wire and copper piping out of the building.”
The building had been scheduled to be torn down to make way for a new complex.
