The search for a missing man who fell into the Fraser River trying to save his wife has ended in tragedy.
Police say the body of the 74 year old man was pulled from the water near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal around 2:30pm Monday.
Delta police say the man and his wife were aboard a personal boat that was moored to their houseboat Sunday night.
The woman fell into the water, and police says she was soon followed by her husband who was trying to assist her.
Police say the woman was able to grab on to a structure and was rescued by a neighbour.
The husband wasn’t located, which then prompted the search and rescue operation.
Staff Sgt. Ryan Hall says a neighbor heard calls for help and rescued the woman.
“I think that the community of Delta of a tight community and I think that everybody stepped up and tried to help us and help the family, and that is appreciated by us, by fire, and by the Coast Guard.”
The woman remains in hospital in stable condition.
