The BC Human Rights Tribunal has awarded a Filipino nanny $50,000 after finding she was a virtual slave in a Richmond apartment hotel.
She came to Canada with a family from Hong Kong.
The adjudicator found that the nanny, who cannot be named, was forced to regularly perform sexual acts and the couple she worked for had control over everything she did.
In awarding the woman damages for injury to her dignity and self-respect, the adjudicator said she’d like to believe incidents like this don’t happen in B.C.
The 28-year-old fled the hotel in 2013, and through the kindness of strangers, made it to a shelter for human trafficking victims.
Even then, the couple continued to threaten her and lobbied to have her deported.
The family is back in Hong King and did not return to Canada for the hearing.
RCMP would not say whether they’ve investigated the couple or not.
