Simon Fraser University says they aren’t evicting residents at the Louis Riel residence on their Burnaby Campus.
SFU’S V-P of Finance, Pat Hibbits, says the students are misunderstanding the situation.
“Their leases have not been renewed – their – I think it’s called licenses, we have them instead, but, they have not been renewed and therefore the building is closing. And therefore they have to leave. The word ‘eviction’ has some connotations that are not meant.”
Hibbits says the school is committed to helping students find housing.
However, it needs to be done on a case-by-case basis.
The response comes after students living at the residence claim they’ve received conflicting reports about getting help from the school.
One student claims a report commissioned by SFU says the students wouldn’t have to leave the building.
Only that the ventilation system needs to be replaced.
Students are being asked to leave the building by August.
