What's available for kids next week in Vancouver, Surrey

The Vancouver Park Board is opening up eight community centres, if the teachers’ strike drags into next week.

Commissioner Constance Barnes says the day camp hours and cost vary from centre to centre.

“Some of the centres will be going to September 30th.  I think as we go forward, our fingers are crossed that the negotiations go well, but that being said, we do know that people are going to be really strapped to make sure their children are safe and in a good environment so we’re going all that we can to assist in any way possible.”

Unfortunately many of the programs are nearly full.

Six recreation centres in Surrey will extend their summer day camps, running between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and cost between $22 and $28 a day.

Jim Tyler with the city’s parks department says additional programs before and after those hours will also be available for an extra cost.
