Fisheries and Oceans Canada has temporarily banned fishing from the Chinook salmon fishery in the areas affected by the Mount Polley tailings pond breach.
The ban runs through stretches of the Cariboo River and the Quesnel River, including areas traditionally fished by the Soda Creek First Nation.
The department is calling it a precautionary closure until sample results are released from the waterways affected. Those results are expected later this afternoon.
It’s still unclear exactly how the tailings water will affect the salmon that run through the Cariboo River.
