Death of man at border not suspicious

A 45-year old man who drowned in a deep ditch near the Aldergrove border crossing was likely trying to sneak across.

Suleman Jivani’s body was found on the Lynden side of the line Thursday afternoon by border officers.

Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks says investigators don’t suspect foul play.

“There was no trauma. It appears to be for one reason or another, he ended up in the ditch which is quite deep. It’s about six feet of water. It’s pretty wide, so it was not apparently very easy for him to climb out and we believe he may have been in the water at least two weeks.”

Parks says Jivani was from India and his last known address was in the United States, but he was staying with friends in Vancouver before he drowned.
