Despite cutbacks to funding for some varsity teams at the University of British Columbia, the institution is getting a brand new 40-million dollar Aquatic Centre with an Olympic-sized pool.
Spokesperson with Athletics and Recreation Kavie Toor says it’s funded by future land development and fundraising efforts, including donations.
“The sport review is operational funds that are used on an annual basis allocated towards the varsity high performance sports programs, and this allocated and is funded in a unique way but would come out of a capital project decision making process, versus more of an operational process.”
The UBC Women’s softball team is suing the school for downgrading its status, resulting in less funding.
Meanwhile the aquatic facility is expected to open in September 2016.
