College goes after BC doctor in court

The Discipline Committee of the College of Optometrists of BC is suspending a BC doctor’s registration for three years.

It stems from a patient complaint in 2011.

The patient claims Vancouver Doctor Jerry MacKenzie failed to conduct a proper eye exam, and missed the fact she suffered from a serious, and obvious cataract.

Her G-P later refered her to an opthmologist who spotted it immediately.

Following a hearing, the committee  says Dr. MacKenzie failed to refer the patient to a specialist, as is required, and then altered the clinical record to cover up the fact he failed to make the referral.

He also kept practising, after being ordered to stop.

The College is seeking a BC Supreme Court injunction, preventing him from working through the duration of the suspension.
