Kevin Wong, CPA, CA, is a Partner and MNP’s Leader for Taxation Services in the Vancouver region. Kevin has more than 19 years of experience providing Canadian income tax compliance and Canadian specialty tax services to private and public corporations.
Working one-on-one with his clients, Kevin assists with tax planning related to corporate reorganizations, sale and purchase of businesses and business combinations. His experience has provided him with in-depth knowledge in the areas of immigration and emigration taxation, as well as in taxation related to mining and exploration, including flow-through share financing. Kevin also designs and implements estate plans that protect wealth for current and future generations.
Kevin received his Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) designation in 1998 after earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Finance from Simon Fraser University. Committed to professional development, he has completed parts I, II and III of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-Depth Tax Course, as well as other advanced tax courses. Kevin is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and the Canadian Tax Foundation and has been a group leader for the CICA In-Depth Tax Course. Kevin has been qualified, and appeared, as an expert witness in the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
Lachlan MacPherson, CPA, CA, is a Partner with MNP’s Professional Services team in Vancouver, B.C. Lachlan works closely with owner-managed businesses and high net-worth individuals, offering in-depth tax planning, tax preparation, reporting and business consulting to help clients reach their ultimate financial success.
Lachlan brings more than 20 years of experience providing taxation and business advisory expertise to professionals such as doctors, dentists, lawyers and architects, in addition to a wide range of private enterprise clients. He applies his extensive financial experience in tax services to deliver sound advice to his clients.
Lachlan builds close client relationships to provide peace of mind during the various stages of start-up, growth, maturity and eventual exit strategy of their business through to retirement and estate planning. Lachlan earned his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation in 1991 after receiving his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Calgary. In 1998, he completed CICA’s In-Depth Tax Course.
Katri Ulmonen, CPA, CA, MST, CPA, (WA), is a Partner within MNP’s International Tax Services Group and the firm’s National Director of U.S. Tax Services. She is based out of Vancouver. With more than 21 years of experience, Katri provides a wide array of cross-border tax services, including consulting, compliance for individual and corporations across Canada and the U.S. and advice for companies expanding across the Canadian-U.S. border.
Katri is highly versatile and offers advice for clients in various sectors such as real estate, high-net-worth investors, manufacturing, exports, and family holding companies. With an eye for detail and strong communication skills, Katri identifies issues and integrates complex ideas into cohesive plans for her clients and is able to convey solutions and opportunities in a clear and concise manner.
In 2014, Katri was a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation’s National Tax Conference Steering Committee where her many tax proficiencies were put to use as a panel moderator for the event.
Katri earned her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation for the state of Washington in 2011 and her Chartered Public Accountant (CPA, CA) designation in 1994 and is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation. She completed with honours a Master of Science in Taxation, from the Golden Gate University in 2006. Deeply involved in her community, Katri has been the director of the Homestart Foundation for more than eight years.
Ron Batty, CPA, CA, is a Partner with MNP’s Private Enterprise Services group in Vancouver. Ron serves clients in a variety of industries, including commercial fishing, hospitality, professional sports and broadcasting, real estate and mortgage investment corporations, among others.
With extensive experience in both Canadian and cross-border tax matters, Ron understands and manages a broad range of taxation and accounting issues for his clients, including estate planning, structuring of business acquisition and sales, employee ownership structures, corporate re-organizations and research and development (R&D) incentives. Ron also specializes in Aboriginal tax issues and has been involved in many successful tax appeals and representations with the Canadian Revenue Agency.
Regarding inbound investments, Ron has advised non-Canadian businesses on a variety of accounting and taxation matters specific to entering Canada. He has also provided tax advice to employee groups being transferred to Canadian divisions.
Ron is a designated Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA). He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA) from Simon Fraser University in 1986. Ron actively volunteers in education and family-based activities in his community.
Grant Bazian, CIRP, Trustee is the President and CEO of MNP’s Insolvency Practice. Based in Vancouver, Grant oversees all areas of MNP’s Corporate and Consumer insolvency services from inception to completion, including bankruptcies, receiverships, proposals, CCAAs, business reviews, viability assessments, liquidations, and agency appointments. He also liaises with all MNP trustees on marketing, professional development, best practices, policies, procedures and expansion.
With over 23 years of experience, Grant has worked on many diverse projects, including forensic accounting engagements, forensic audits, dispute consultation, calculation of business interruption losses and shareholder disputes. He has also worked in a wide variety of industries, including retail, agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, airlines, marine, recreational, trucking, mechanics, home building, contracting, real estate, pharmaceutical, hospitality, entertainment, property management and diamond production.
Grant earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta and an Honours Accounting Diploma from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. He also holds his Trustee’s License and his Canadian Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals designation.
Nancy King, CPA, CA, TEP is an Associate with MNP’s Taxation Services group in the South Surrey office. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in public practice, Nancy delivers tax services to personal, trust and private company clients.
Working closely with her clients, Nancy provides a wide range of specialized tax services to small and medium-sized organizations in a variety of industries, helping her clients to pursue attractive tax opportunities. Developing an in-depth understanding of her clients’ circumstances, Nancy delivers strong advice and strategies for corporate, trust and personal tax planning, estate and succession planning and corporate reorganizations. By learning about her clients and their businesses, Nancy provides tailored solutions to meet their unique needs and goals.
Nancy is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), designated in 1997. She completed the CICA’s In-Depth Tax Course and the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Tax Estate Planning (TEP) course in 2000. She is a member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
Ken Robinson, CPA, CA, is a Business Advisor and Partner with MNP’s Taxation Services team in Port Moody. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, Ken helps business owners and professionals maximize wealth through customized tax strategies and solutions.
Ken takes an out-of-the-box approach to developing solutions for minimizing tax, allowing him to see tax planning opportunities to better meet clients’ needs. Whether he is working with professionals such as doctors, dentists, lawyers and chiropractors, or assisting clients in construction, retail, manufacturing and the service industry, Ken keeps his clients’ best interests and unique objectives and challenges top of mind.
Delivering a full range of taxation and assurance services, Ken oversees the preparation of financial statements and tax returns, tax planning for acquisitions and divestitures, estate and succession planning, advanced remuneration strategies and tax reorganizations.
Ken obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours from Simon Fraser University in 1982. He holds the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) designations, qualifying in 1986.
Kelly Taylor, CPA, CA, CGA, is a Principal and Business Advisor with MNP’s Real Estate and Construction Services group in South Surrey. Over his 13 years in public practice, Kelly has delivered audit, accounting, taxation and business advisory services to owner-managed businesses in a range of industries, including mid- to large-sized real estate and construction companies along with clients who do business in the United States.
Analytical and dedicated to his clients’ success, Kelly possesses a deep understanding and knowledge of guidelines and procedures. He is efficient and detail-oriented and creates positive working relationships that deliver value for his clients. Kelly has provided assistance for standards committee, and quality control, where he was responsible for ensuring the financial statements and note disclosures were in compliance with generally accepted accounting standards.
Kelly is dual-designated, having received his Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation in 2006 and his Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) designation in 2009. He also has a Bachelor of Technology in Accounting from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Kelly is a CPA School of Business facilitator and a member of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.
Heather Weber, CPA, CGA, is the leader of MNP’s Indirect Tax Group. Since 2001, Heather has specialized in assisting her clients with all their indirect taxation needs, including: GST, PST, Excise Taxes, Property Taxes and more. Working closely with her team, Heather serves business owners, Aboriginals, Hutterites and clients in the health care, winery, construction and public company sectors.
Heather’s in-depth understanding of indirect tax issues helps her develop customized tax minimization strategies for her clients. She also helps organizations capture the compliance information they need to claim all the benefits they are entitled to. Heather also has extensive experience in real property and cross-border transactions.
Through extensive dealings with both the federal and provincial governments as an auditor for the Canada Revenue Agency, Heather has the insight and experience her clients need when dealing with government authorities at the audit and appeal stage.
Before earning her Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation in 1995, Heather received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University in 1991. She is also a member of both the Kelowna Tax Discussion Group and the Vancouver Commodity Tax Discussion Group.
Wendy Lewis, CPA, CA, is a Business Advisor and Regional Leader of MNP’s Succession Services team on Vancouver Island. Delivering a wide range of services from business start up to exit planning, Wendy takes great care to understand her clients’ needs and values to help them reach their goals. Her clients include professionals and owner-managed businesses in many sectors, including retail, residential and commercial construction and real estate.
Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in public practice, Wendy works one-on-one with clients across Vancouver Island to deliver customized solutions that meet their unique challenges. Using a balanced approach, she looks at the business holistically — from operations to finance to human resources — to develop strategies that help her clients thrive.
To help business owners realize their vision for life after business, Wendy focuses on minimizing taxes, maximizing cash flow and protecting assets through effective structuring, all while keeping succession and the eventual sale of the business in mind.
Wendy holds the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) designations, qualifying in 2000 after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia. In 2011, Wendy received the Early Achievement Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in recognition of her leadership in the profession and her commitment to serving her community. In 2015, she was recognized as a “Citizen of the Century” during the City of Courtenay’s centennial year.
