Did you know?
Metro Vancouver produces three million tonnes of garbage per year.
More than half (about 1.66 million tonnes) is managed through reduce, recycle and reuse initiatives.
What happens to the rest of the garbage?
According to Marvin Hunt, Chair of Metro Vancouver Waste Management Committee:
-Vancouver Landfill in Delta takes 750,000 tonnes per year
-Burnaby’s Waste-to-Energy Facilities takes 280,000 tonnes per year
-Cache Creek Landfill in the BC Interior takes 500,000 tonnes per year
The Goal!
CKNW's goal is to examine the future of garbage disposal in the Lower Mainland. What direction will Metro Vancouver take to deal with this matter? Cache Creek is due to reach capacity by late 2010. Where will the garbage go? Should it be incinerated? We’ll look at all waste disposal options such as composting, recycling, reducing packaging, landfills, waste-to-energy plans, etc.
