Federal budget will drive Canadian shoppers stateside in droves

The Consumers Association of Canada is warning people to brace for higher prices after the federal government hiked import duties on some countries, including China.

President Bruce Cran says it is a certainty people will see the price of goods go up.

"That is going to cost I believe something like 300-million dollars and the thing that surprised us I guess is that this is more fodder and more interest in people going across the line to shop just to survive and I think it is a very serious matter and that is the way we are looking at it."

Cran says consumers will also go online in more numbers to try and save some money, money that will leave the Canadian economy.

"I think it is pretty sad at a time when you know hundreds of millions of fliers are going across the line for starters and then on an almost daily basis are crossing the line to take advantage of prices that are already with differentials of 15 to 30 percent."

Cran says he has little hope the feds will change course and re-instate countries like China and India back onto a list for import tax breaks.

"Perhaps they would if enough people complained. Sadly in Canada we take almost everything that is thrown at us at some point in time I keep hoping that the last straw will go onto the camel's back and people will take umbrage at what is happening. My own feeling is that this won't mean much to Canadians in that respect we will defend ourselves by crossing the line to shop."

He says his group will let Ottawa know they think it is a bad move.

I don't understand why CBSA doesn't enforce the 24 hour limit on all the Costco shoppers that go to Bellingham for 2 hours and buy $300 of groceries?

      @ianm_0078 seriously?

@ianm_0078 I agree. Rules are rules, so let's step it up.

"Sadly in Canada we take almost everything that is thrown at us" That says it all. The government knows it too. People in Canada are the biggest pathetic pushovers in the WORLD! And once again we get screwed form this Harper fool. Sooo tired of it. No wonder my cousins moved to Australia and New Zealand. They are so happy they left here.

On the plus side maybe this will give Canadian manufactures a chance to compete. If so we could see some jobs coming back to Canada.

The ones who will pay are the retailers, the retail jobs they will have to cut (because they don't ever want to cut prices) and the people too poor to go across the border to shop

@lg_3045 For what it costs to get there, and what you save, it's not worth the hassle and time sitting at the borders.
Of course I think it's silly to drive 35 minutes to save 2 cents a pound on a 1 1/2 pound roast too, or .2 cents on 10 litres of gas.

Funny all these people that save sheckles on a few things in the states, risk having to pay duty on half their purchases, still bitch about the price of gas going up a penny a litre, while they burn their savings in gas, sitting in the border lineup because they need the a/c and stereo on while they sit still for 20 minutes.

@RichardF_4221 Hmmm, you must not shop in the states much. I travel there regularly and the savings are huge for my family. The last time I fueled up in the states ( last week), I saved about 20 cents/litre, about $11 (typical) on a 60l tank. It doesn't really matter what the price is in Canada, the U.S. prices reflect relative to ours. Then I buy 2 gallons of milk every other week (timed with gas purchase) for about $5.70, almost half the price here in BC. If you eat cheese, it's also roughly half the cost. Clothing is almost always 20-30% cheaper and more on average. This goes for pretty much anything from appliances, electronics, home hardware, and tires. We go online to check prices, and they are always low enough to justify crossing the border. Oh, and Nexus reduces my wait to time to almost nil. While others wait patiently, I drive across freely. I cross at Sumas, so there's no wait times. Calculated savings over the course of a year on average? About $3000-4000. I like those kind of sheckles :).

all those $5 -$10 savings by shopping state side adds up to a few billion $$$ out of the canadian economy and into the pockets of another country. and quess who allows it to happen ? the canadian government . they doubled the amount one can bring back into canada. why ? we should be questioning our local conservative representatives from ottawa not the people lined up at the border.

Enforce what limit? Are you folks that daft? Many groceries NAFTA is duty free and tax free (just like how they are here in BC) and you can bring in a certain quota per person across the border every time. How much tax do you pay for your week of groceries? If it's more than a few dollars, you're just the whiner who pays for all prepackaged/precooked food products.

@opq (replying to the first post, so when I meant daft folks, I specifically meant @ianm_0078 and @RichardF_4221

Wonder how many shoppers declare the stuff as they should...

Food, plants, animals and related products

All food, plants, animals, and related products must be declared.
