Clark tells feds to "sharpen its pencils" on pipeline proposals

Premier Christy Clark says Ottawa must re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard station if it wants to see pipelines built across BC.

Clark denies she's issued an "ultimatum" but at the same time says the federal government must "sharpen its pencils" to win over British Columbians.

"If they wanna convince the people of our province that they intend to protect our coast, they can't keep that Kits Coast Guard base closed, they'll have to reopen it, that has to be part of the discussion I think if they wanna convince us that they're serious."

Clark says she made that sentiment clear to Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver when he was in Vancouver this week to announce new tanker safety rules.

@brianp1950 That's one way of looking at it. It could also be seen as a brilliant way of acting on behalf of the many supporters that still have a faint glimmer of hope for the coastguard base.

@brianp1950 Now, Premier Clark has added a 6th condition that must be met before she will allow the Enbridge pipeline to be built.

Actually, that may indicate that she has caved in to Mr. Harper and no longer opposes a pipeline and tanker project that will create more harm to the environment that will never be offset by any economic benefit.

Now, Premier Clark will sell BC out for a paltry $700k/year cost of operating the Kits Coast Guard Base. This is her way of weaseling out of the 5 original conditions for Enbridge.

I would not put it past her to make a pre-election announcement that plans are underway to rebuild the Kits Base bigger and better. Now, that she is at the end of her mandate, she will promise anything knowing that she will not be around to have to deliver on her promises.

Include Prosperity Fund in that category. David Emerson states the Prosperity Fund will rob future generations of resource benefits because Premier Clark's proposals are too short-sighted, yet too far in the future to properly evaluate.

Also, consider her promises to build that Wood Building in Prince George. Aside from the surrounding scandal, David McLean and the CN may well step forward as a major tenant. That would not come as a surprise if the BC Rail sale scandal rears its ugly head again.

And, add her promise to start planning for a new Deas crossing and a new hospital in Penticton.

Will she ever stop? Well, May14 is not that far off.

At least if she is going to give ultimatums, the one she could actually use, would be for Ottawa to REMOVE the illegal Port Mann toll bridge. THAT would make a lot of people happy. But that isn't going to happen is it? So goodbye Liberals!

@taxed to death Has a quick look at the article you mention. I'm not all that swayed with his writing. He's put together a few things that look bad, and then a bunch of quotes from other people. Typical actually. A supposed strong liberal supporter is a land speculator and was going to buy property to quickly flip and is upset. Yah most guys like that don't want to hold onto anything if it's not going to net them a bigger profit. Big deal, you got stung in a land deal. Bet it's happened before, and it'll happen again.

"Wanna" ? Is she taking speech lessons from G Dubya Bush now?

The writing is already on the wall. The Feds are now starting to stick their nose into the pipeline proposal. With the amount of money that will hit the Federal bank account with royalities, they are going to make sure that the pipeline is built.
In a nutshell, we in B.C. will have exactly nothing to say on the subject. The Feds are the boss.

@joes_2868 You are right BC has no say in this.Trudeau's Charter of Rights and Freedom, put an end to that. The greater public good in all. As far as the pipe line is concerned. I think we need a lot more than one.

    Come on CKNW!
'wanna'? Never mind how someone speaks that is being reported on, the report should be correct in spelling and grammar. Since when has slang been accpted in the news reporting business?
I have noticed this on the talk shows as well when the Producer may have a say at the end of the show (Bill Goods show comes to mind).
Lets quit the slang and speak appropriately.
Now that is off my chest, I agree that this comment by CC could be a smart manouvering move seeking support form those pushing to have the Kits base re-opened.

@Chuck M Stop drinking and doing drugs you fool. If you think for a second the Feds take anything serious coming out of that lying criminal Clarks yap you have lost your mind....further they will be dealing with Dix in 2 months and not her...obviously you don't pay attention to the recent scandals in this criminal government we have.

      @Chuck M I think you've made Mr. Death angry.

So is she saying that if they announced tomorrow that the base would be opened again that she would greenlight the pipeline projects? If it was that simple, Alberta would likely pony-up for the Kits coast guard station.
    1. Ron_26 posted on 03/20/2013 06:58 PM
@rclr No. She didn't say that. Nice try though.
    2. StephenG_3 posted on 03/20/2013 07:48 PM
@rclr NO, there are other conditions that must be met.

Like I always smelt, Harper will re-open the CG Station. CC will stick her lovely chest out, in the hopes of securing some votes. Enbridge will get passed, and when CC falls on her face, she will join the happy throng of Harper's merry a$$ lickers, and get either a Chinese or India(n) consular position. The town drunk came out of his HST stinker just fine, n'est pas. This is politics at it's finest, and all should have the moxxy to see it. Western Canadians are a joke. We have all the marbles, but no brains!
If CC was that sincere with regards to the Kits CG Station, why didn't she offer 700 grand and keep the expensive piece of real estate afloat??????? for a year and keep whinning about her 5 demands, re: pipeline. This bu!!shit and bravado at it's finest!

Read Les Leyne piece in Times Colonist that suggests Premier Clark and her government are getting ahead of themselves-just to look good.

Premier Clark is all over the map on pipelines. She is now in favour of a second bitumen pipeline which will supposedly supply Black's yet to be financed refinery.

The oil producers will not take the chance of depending on the Black refinery to upgrade their product into refined products which will presumably be safer to ship by tanker because there are no assurances that Black can sell all of the refined products so they will still want to tanker bitumen. Why would the producers put all their eggs in one basket?

And, even if Black builds his own pipeline, there are no assurances that he can sell the entire output of his refinery. It will then be certain that he will ship bitumen instead. There will always be a market for bitumen in Asia which will refine the kinds and quantity of product demanded by their market. Also, why would Asia give up the lucrative profit margins available from refining bitumen? Asia is not stupid.

In my opinion, there is a plan to build not just the Enbridge pipeline but a second pipeline-not for refining in BC- but to supply Asia with more of what it wants-it's called bitumen.

If Black is serious, he will deposit the $15 billion with the province as security and commit to building the refinery first.

Before we jump on the bandwagon,it would be prudent to have Mr. Black actually put his money where his mouth is-in the form of a non-returnable deposit.

That said, there is too much risk to our environment if the pipelines are permitted.

I'm curious about a comment made today on NW during the Mike Smyth show regarding Kits base....one of the people Mike interviewed said that when he spoke to CC back in JANUARY she said that she wanted to make this very point about no Kits base, no Enbridge......
so my question is, WHY DID she wait to make this statement PUBLICLY NOW????
Why didn't she make it in January?
I know the answer, and I think it is just as shameful as the whole ethnicgate fiasco.....
Hello Christie....it's Federal jurisdiction, and you have no say. Knock knock, any one home?

there's that old saying about putting lipstick on a pig.....

Please for the love of all of us British Columbians.....stop making us look like fools!
