One of the migrant workers detained after an immigration enforcement raid last week in Vancouver has been deported.

Oscar Mata was one of several workers detained after the raid by Canada Border Services Agency officers at a construction site.

The event has sparked outrage because it was filmed by a reality TV crew for the show Border Security.

Mata spoke to reporters at YVR before he was deported back to Mexico this morning.

"In the future, the thinking gonna change, right, for the people, the immigrant people here in Canada because Canada is the best country in the world but a couple things they have to six, to halt the immigration people."

Activists say more than 16,000 people have signed a petition to have the show cancelled.

I wonder if the 16,000 petitioners are Canadian citizens? I haven't seen this show so I don't know what the fuss is about. I would be interested to know how many illegal immigrants are living and working in Canada.

Also, why aren't the employers who hire the illegals facing any charges?
    1. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/20/2013 08:29 AM
@Newshound59 They may be. Auditors will likely be going over the books as we speak trying to find anything they can on the employers. Might not be an immigration charge, might be worksafe, CRA, or other charges instead.

@Newshound59 Since 2011 1 million China Chinese and 5,800 Chinese Foreign Students have entered BC via immigration fraud in the Chinese community and Jason Kenny is well aware of this! Source direct e-mail from Jason Kenny and first reporter by the Ottawa Citizen Jan 2012

Filming of the raid is irrelevant. The workers that are in Canada without authorization are here illeagally . That they have been caughtby the CSBA is a good thing.
Maybe we should start a petition calling for the camera crews to add interviews with the people doing the hiring!!

@ChrisM_18 Right on! Chris,I bet we will find more Liberal supporters in that group! They made it along with Harper government, open season on Canadian workers or God forbid in a union!

In agreement. We as a country need to go after the persons hiring the illegals. Charity begins at home. There are a lot of Canadians who need work. Laws need to be put in place that really make it not worth it for companies to hire illegals.
Film crew or no Film crew the CBSA needs to continue its work. Are these 16000 people saying we shouldnt report crime in the news media? all this tv show is is a in-depth news footage, nothing more. The citizens of Canada have a right to know what is going on inside our borders and who is doing it.
Good by Oscar One more job for a British Columbian.

@UnemployedinBC The only reason we heard about this raid, is because the film crew was involved. Waiting to hear the fate of the company involved. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to hire these people, and obviously pay them under the table.
The CBSA does their job day in and day out without any spotlight on them. I think this show the couple times I've caught part of it does a good job to show that they do their job well, and are human and care about the people caught in some of these situations.

@UnemployedinBC I doubt it a legal temporary foreign worker will fill the position if they hired illegal ones. Now is the chance to say, they looked everywhere to find a good Canadian worker,.as Richard suggests it might not be an immigration charge.why not? He must be in the know to state this one, as this is common practice with foreign companies to by- pass Canadian or BC work safe programs, among other laws but the main drive is to not hire Canadians they hate to provide coffee breaks and decent wages or follow basic safety rules plus they usually hire their own people to exploit and hide amongst thier ranks, shame! Go NDP Go

I watched this program all the time when in Canada and really enjoy it. Unfortunately, in the USA it is not carried on local TV so I have not seen any episodes in a while.

Someone should start a position commending the CBSA on doing it's job.
So...Mulcair has come out in support of illegal immigrants taking jobs from Canadians and those that commit EI fraud. He has come against promoting our natural resources and, despite evidence to the contrary from experts, insists Canada suffers from the Dutch disease.
As scary as Harper is on some issues, he is definitely the lesser of two evils....

@MikeD_5831 The statements from the Cons/liberals of the coalition so afraid of the scams being exposed by the people they support. These people were brought here by these right winged governments and this stupid foreign wokers program!.They the NDP want to find out who is responsible for the Human trafficking and exploiting of workers that has been responsible for my company losing contracts.New people on site from one day to the next and moved around daily.I ask one guy how long has he been in Canada 3 wks was the answer and now was an electrician, I had to show him how to secure the receptacle plates (plug plate) they work our people stay home! Go NDPs go

If I were him I'd sue for invasion of privacy. He still deserves to be deported for being here illegally and all that but I can't believe that a lawyer wouldn't be contacting him to stick it to the government for authorizing this public 'humiliation' of this guy

The deportation and the filming are two separate issues and I think he would have a pretty good chance to make some cash on the second issue
    1. woodstover posted on 03/20/2013 10:11 AM
@DavidSB He is here illegally, he has no right to sue anyone.

@DavidSB Gee wizz davey. I didn't know you could come here as an illegal and have rights.Humiliation. Who cares. If he was here leaglally he would not have been on camera. Have been going through the hoops to get my fiance here from the US. It seems her only problem is she is WHITE.

wah wah boo hoo sign a petition to end the show, gimme a break, ever watch COPS? you get busted doing illegal stuff, its a matter of public record! these are not immigrants, they are illegal aliens, play by the rules like other immigrants have had to do to come here!

Anyone here illegally should have ZERO Rights! Period!

Who cares that they were filmed doing something illegal, who cares

This stuff drives me crazy, it should be a no brainer. You are here illegally, working illegally and circumventing not only the process but jobs for those who do pay taxes.

I would prefer a massive blitz with plenty of cameras rolling to flush out these undesirables.

I can understand an illegal being deported. I have never seen our Government mov so quick on any issue. What I do not understand is an illegal coming into Canada, committing crimes and going through our judicial system at our cost and being able to stay in our country at our cost (usually the welfare system) and then having the gaul to take their cases to the higher court systems just to stay. Instead they should be sent packing back to their counrty of origin on the first contact. I would prefer a person in our country who wants to find employment than one who wants to rape the system for all its worth.

We should take advice on how we operate our Canadian immigration system from someone being deported? Canadian citizens come first in Canada and nothing less is acceptable.

We need more action like this, now what are they going to do about the 1 million Chinese and 5,580 Chinese Foreign Students that entered Canada via immigration fraud in the Chinese community, reported to me via e-mail from Jason Kenny and a story first reported in Ottawa Citizen in January 2012, that why in a survey to CKNW we need more follow up what has been done these issues. Reminder do not Vote for the NDP or Liberals in the next Provincial election or you will see more of this!

Some posters are getting carried away by racist rhetoric. To claim 1,000,000 Chinese and 5800 Chinese Foreign Students have entered BC via immigration fraud since 2011 is simply over the top. The numbers do not add up. Don't forget that many emmigraed from Hong Kong as British subjects.

Keep this rhetoric up and there will be calls for a new head tax to be imposed on anyone who wants to immigrate to this country even before we get around to apologize for the first head tax which was raw racism. REPEAT: raw racism.

Baesd on the FALSE 1,005,800 illegal immigrant claim, every Canadian of Chinese extraction will now be viewed as having just disembarked from a plane-illegally. Of course, when they speak or write, they will demonstrate that they are as versed in the English language as anyone else. Furthermore, they are probably more articulate as well.

When it comes to employing illegal immigrants or temporary foreign workers, businesses and corporations must be held accountable as well. It is all about keeping wages low to produce higher profits. Or, it is because Canadians are too lazy and want to complain all the time. And, that fits in with the philosphy of our governments.
    1. Ken280 posted on 03/20/2013 03:48 PM
@insite Most of the people here support the Chinese miners working here then, they jump on this band wagon and then it's ok for Liberal supported business, but now it is on TV they jump to support the deportation of the workers but not many willing to go after the people that do the hiring . I have had many argument here with the people chastising me for the Governments foreign worker program that i detest. Seem, you people want your cake and eat it also.Just plain hypocrisy, of some supporters of the liberal/Cons of the coalition.Go NDP go
  14. SlimP_9860 posted on 03/20/2013 03:29 PM
People who come here illegally are likely to work under the table for cash, not contribute to our society and tax base, and are likely to commit more illegal acts. I don't care what race they are or where they came from. They don't have the right to be here.
    1. Ken280 posted on 03/20/2013 03:55 PM
@SlimP_9860 They do pay taxes, they buy lots of food and clothing, pay rent and buy lot of beer! Taxed to the nines! Go after the people that hire and you will find they are Liberal/cons of the coalition! who else, would turn a blind eyes on this one! No inspection unless injuries by work safe BC. How to tell if the company is non- union? Most do not wear a hard hat on site! Go NDP Go
