Vancouver is one step closer to its goal of being known as the world's greenest city.

It has been named the first ever Global Earth Hour Capital by the World Wildlife Fund.

The award will be handed out during a conference today in Malmo, Sweden.

Vancouver beat out 65 other cities from six countries. The five other finalists included San Francisco; Forli, Italy; New Delhi, India; Oslo, Norway; and Uppsala, Sweden.

Vancouver has also been named people's choice after scoring the most votes online for its commitments to sustainability, fighting climate change and reducing carbon emissions.

The next worldwide Earth Hour event, in which people are encouraged not to use electricity, is slated for this Saturday, March 23, between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Groan .... This certainly means we will be enduring more idiocy from Mayor Moonbeam and his west coast wingnuts.
Standby for more bikelane nonsense, more chickens in the backyard, more Carbon tax lunacy etcetc

@ChrisM_18 here here! why do we even need car lanes at all? everything should be a bike lane in Vancouver, and should be two or three seater bikes to save even more energy!

@ChrisM_18 Don't you know that global warming is proven fact? And the science is good too? And it's proven that carbon dioxide is making this planet burn up?

This whole global warming thing has nothing to do with wealth transfer 1st world countries to 3rd world countries and to fill government coffers.

We need more fuels taxes! We need higher carbon taxes! We need to buy more carbon credits from Ghana. We all need to stop heating our homes. We all need to stop breathing because it's killing us!!!!

We are sinking ever deeper if this is the best we can be recognized for.
