New cameras, lighting, for Surrey's Colebrook Road
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

New lighting and closed circuit TV cameras will be installed along Surrey's Colebrook Road starting next week.

That's the immediate response by Surrey's mayor and RCMP to four bodies found in recent weeks along the isolated stretch of road.

The cost is 80-thousand dollars, shared between a number of departments.

Watts admits she's concerned the new measures could force criminals to move elsewhere.

"That's why we're looking at the entire Ridge area so that one area we're dealing with immediately and you're quite right we don't want to move any of the issues or problems anywhere else in the city so we're taking a broader perspective as well."

As for a long-term crime action plan for the Panorama Ridge area, Watts says that's still being discussed.

Stupidity at its finest. Yes, announce the beefed up security. Stand on the tallest building in Surrey and yell it out. Post it on the Facebook page. Make it headline news.

Yep. It's not like a new spot can't be found. Nice warning. It's a good PR move but it's not going to do anything except move the problem to a different location. I guess Surrey wants this stuff out of Surrey. In that case, make a bigger budget for cameras.
