More backlash over arrest of immigrants being filmed by reality TV crews

Canada's public safety minister is facing more criticism in the wake of last week's video-taped arrests of immigrants suspected of being illegal.

Protesters say Freedom of Information documents show Vic Toews personally approved the filming by crews from the reality show Border Security.

In May 2011, he signed an 11-page contract with the production company.

Local activist Sara Kendall says more than 7,500 people have now signed a petition demanding that program be cancelled.

"It’s important that people understand the levels of complicity between the local companies, the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) itself – all the way up to the minister, Vic Toews, giving his explicit, written permission for something so horrible and de-humanizing to take place in Vancouver."

The families of some detained immigrants have also denounced the program, calling it a disgusting violation of their privacy and civil liberties.

Yeah, takes a man to sign off on a film to cash in on people's misery.

@LeonW Maybe we could have them live at your house Leon?
Or maybe you would like to give your job to an Illegal immigrant?
These are CRIMINALS . . . they have broken the law.
    2. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/18/2013 03:22 PM
@LeonW The show doesn't just film illegal immigrants. It also shows how they deal with people's mistakes when they come to the country. It often shows the human side of how they deal with upset visitors that end up dealing with Customs for whatever reason.

you will notice that whoever wrote the Headline : "MORE BACKLASH OVER ARRESTS OF IMMIGRANTS BEING FILMED BY REALITY TV CREWS " , neglects to add the key word "ILLEGAL" !!!
After whining weeks before and to this day about the Chinese temporary Workers taking BC jobs and should be sent back to china (LEGAL), they now squeal about Illegals from other countries being tracked down and detained by the Men and women of CBSA . Because a film crew illustrates the procedures used and broadcasts the results, the usual suspects get their shorts in a knot . If these same whiners got off their butts and went to bat for these "ILLEGALS" and helped them obtain Legal status, they would actually be doing something useful !!
    1. Ken280 posted on 03/18/2013 11:39 AM
@ Brian WA Who are you talking about whiner's seems to me not many of the right wingers here cared about the workers or Canadian workers given a chance to obtain work at these mines, all they care about is the invested interest of the corporations and the policies of their governments. The unions were fighting for the Chinese miner as well as the Canadian workers.I think its time maybe we called an amnesty, we are short of workers and they are here anyways, we will see just how many people are here and they could start paying into the system! The money saved will be astronomical in the court costs or official paper work outsourced to other countries.Drug dealers, criminals or people rushing to our boarders will not be allowed to enter to register! I think you would find we do not have a worker shortage after all! The Americans do it to clear the backlog of paper work in their Immigration offices. Why for once do we not try it! Done correctly a win.win for all!

Yea , let's keep letting more and more folks in with no process ! That way all the really wealthy capitalists will have a great pool of workers who are ready , willing and able to work for peanuts , and by the way pay taxes on peanuts. I do have compassion for people who want to improve their lot in life but we have rules , if we didn't we would have a really larger problem. We in Canada can not solve all the problems in other nations , we can help but turning a blind eye to illegal immigrants is not the way. Check out the issues we have with , Canadian Tire Stores , Tim Hortons, McDonalds industry all wanting to bring in workers. We have become a McJob Nation.

@AlexK All of the retail are fixed on part-time and they said many times it would be temporary now it is fixed with these companies. To by-pass this now they fill their employment quotas with foreign workers and by-pass Canadians. The right wing love this because the bottom line will improve the royalties for their bank accounts and nothing for the 800,000 people in BC that work part-time with 3 Jobs or under employed most are working at or below poverty! to become more educated like the wealthy spew just try getting a loan when in that tax bracket.Go NDP GO

If filming illegals living and working in Canada is the only way to get them deported... then film away.....They are ILLEGAL. They may be nice.. hard-working people with families..but they don't deserve to be here unless they jump thru the hoops as other immigrants must do. I opine... anyway

@nancyn_5738 Yes in fact they may be nice hard-working people with families. But they are taking jobs away from nice hard-working people with families who were born and raised in Canada, for generations.

Yes I know that it costs more to hire a Canadian Citizen when you have to pay things like EI and such, rather than paying an illegal a lesser wage under the table.

Yes I know that you say you cant find any Canadians who are skilled to do the job. Your lack of investing in the future of your business by training and upgrading new employees is not Canada's crisis. Its your crisis brought on by your greed and laziness. It was your support of the Liberal Govt who the day after Gordon Campbell was elected began dismantling the whole apprenticeship system in BC. Hire and Train Canadian Citizens or shut your business down. Govt is supposed to be for the citizens of Canada not you profit driven business, based on greed.

Yes I know that an illegal wont take you to work-safe if you violate work-safe law.

Yes I know Timmies runs your franchise store on such a tight margin that you cant afford to pay Canadians a living wage and have to revert to hiring TFWs and illegals and pay them 15% less.

Yes I know that times are tough and you went into business to make money and you have to make a living too. BMWS, Mercs and Whistler condos have high upkeep dont they.

Yes Vic Toews I salute you and those who are working the front lines to defend Canada.

Why? with all the whining about Govt never doing an honest days work is there so much upset about a branch of Govt doing an honest days work with a film crew behind them.

It is my belief that Canada is under attack and these hardworking people of the CBSA are trying to protect it.

I support the Government and the Border Agency in this project. It is an affront to those who legally applied for Permanent Residency and subsequent Citizenship in Canada.

Illegal entry and illegal residency in Canada must not be permitted. The more this is brought out in the open the more those who are illegal or otherwise thinking of doing same will be stopped.

Good on the Harper government and the Border Agency.

@StephenG_3 I fully support the Harper government to their approach on this issue nice to see them standing up for Canada for a change. . I fully support the actions of the Canadian Border Service Agency, These people are ILLEGAL remember that most important word ILLEGAL

Refs the cameras, those shows never show a person face without their approval, regardless of whether they are Illegal or not.

I did not see the video but I hope they are going to investigate and charge the employers who probably knowingly have been hiring these illegals.I have a gut feeling no CCP,EI,WCB or even taxes were being submitted.

The CBSA and Vic Toews are doing their job. Nothing wrong with filming their work either, it shows that we have immigration rules and laws and that we enforce them. Canadian citizens come first in this country.
  9. Pete J posted on 03/18/2013 10:42 AM
NeilS is right. Just imagine if the companies who do the hiring were subject to Reality TV cameras. Minister Toews strategy is the same as going after prostitutes instead of the johns
    1. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/18/2013 03:29 PM
@Pete J Does it say anywhere that Border Services aren't chasing the employers? Will we see them on camera, likely not. Most work out of private offices, and permission would have to be asked to enter the offices with a camera.
Border Services do go further than just the worker. They and the CRA will be investigating the employer. CRA will likely be auditting the books to find out how these people were allowed to slip through the cracks. I'm thinking it'll be a "contract worker" situation. If the "contractor" doesn't work for anyone else, he can be considered a contract employee by CRA and WorkSafe.

I believe that this show has been going on for some time now. I can recall seeing shows of border busts at both the land and airport. If this had been a child porn bust everyone would have been applauding the CBSA. I think Libby Davis should get her priorities straight in defending people that have no rights here. If they are found that they have legitimate reasons for being here then no charges will be pursued. If the few are found not to be here legally then put them on a plane and bye bye. Sorry but I cannot feel any sympathy for any persons that knowingly break the law, get caught and cry foul. Canada has become a melting pot for persons from around the world but sometime you still have to skim of the slag.

I fail to understand why all of a sudden filming law enforcement in action (reality TV) is a bad thing. Show's such as COP's / Serve & Protect and even full production shows such as America's Most Wanted have been on television for years. I applaud the concept & is if the ratings are there, continue with theses types of programs.

    ILLEGAL!!!! ILLEGAL!!!
We are forgetting hte key word here!!

Why if we do anythign ILLEGAL inn ANY OTHER COUNTRY we are in trouble BUT.....in good ole Canada the ILLEGALS had 'rights'?????WTFFFFF

So it seems that there is a lot of support here for the CBSA.
What i would like to see next is lets make it illegal to hire illegals and expose these employers who are skirting the issue of hiring local to benefit their bottom line. Does anyone have the guts to take on these violators who are hiring illegals?
    1. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/18/2013 03:33 PM
@UnemployedinBC It IS illegal to hire illegal immigrants.
It's also illegal to have an ongoing relationship with an employee and still consider him as casual labour.
It is illegal to hire someone and not have them listed as an employee for taxation, ei, and worksafe priviledges, unless they are contractors who have to usually carry their own wcb, liability, and pay their own taxes.
However income from these contractors still has to be declared by the company.
  14. tonys_4876 posted on 03/18/2013 01:21 PM
This is a GREAT show. Sounds like the people against it haven't watched it. It's mainly about people getting busted for trying to get drugs thru borders and airports. It's informative and rebuilds trust in our law enforcement.
  15. TeriR posted on 03/18/2013 04:05 PM
This show has been airing for a while now, and it has been interesting to see what some will do to skirt due process and proper application.

Two of the immigrants, this show profiled, had been previously deported - the one, three times. Now he has 'kids' here and wants to stay. The other, his wife and kid went back to Honduras and he works to send them money.

They are being paid cash so no tax is being paid.

Why isn't someone looking into the contractor and or sub-contractor that hired these gentlemen? This is obviously not a one-off for them.

The NDP is now crying about this and making waves, getting petitions etc.... (typical, let's play politics versus looking out for the general public)

The NDP's motto "Soft on crime, all the time'.

Please arrest as many of them as you can and deport everyone of the ILLEGAL ones asap, please. Fine the companies and if it is a repeat offender, shut down the people employing them. It's time Canada and Canadians took back Canada.

I am not interested in supporting the world. I along with my family and friends have a hard enough time as it is in today's world.

And don't even start with the "no one is illegal" political garbage, this is not the United States. Illegal is illegal, not some goofy title like undocumented migrant worker. What a bunch of baloney.
