Delta Police say they're conducting an operational review in relation to an attack by two pit bulls late last night.

One of the pitbulls is dead after being shot by one of the officers.

Police say shortly before 11:00 last night, two officers and a police dog were attacked by the pitbulls while they were doing routine patrols in the area of the 700 block of Chester Road.

One of the dogs fled after being hit with a baton, but the other pit bull apparently bit the hand of one of the officers and attacked the police dog.

Police say one of the officers shot the dog after several attempts to fend it off.

The scene was secured and later released.

The dogs' owner and another person arrived while the investigation was going on.

Police say the two tried to obstruct the investigation and were arrested.

They've been released and charges are being considered.

One of the officers was treated at hospital and is home recovering from a bite wound and possible broken bones to his hand.

He needed numerous stitches.

Police say the other officer is reported to have several minor injuries to both hands.

The police dog suffered puncture wounds to the head, ear and eye area.

thought the guy holed up on his houseboat with two of his dogs, after his dog was shot, and then he then lit the houseboat fire?

@amateya I'm thinking the dogs weren't the problem. As usual.

Are people going to start picking on pit bulls now and suggesting that they are unfairly treated in the media? I think in general most reported dog bites don't require the use of lethal force to remove a limb from mouth. I think everyone is unfair towards pit bulls.

@MisterS I'm not sure why the breed of the dog has to be mentioned except for dramatic pause so you'll read the story. If it said chihuaha, or irish setter, it wouldn't have caught your attention so much. Ironically, I don't think the dogs were the problem, and neither was the breed.
I think the problem that Pit Bulls face is...assholes think they're tough so they get Pit Bulls, Mastiffs, Shephards, and Dobermans. A loser that wants to prove he's tough, isn't going to buy a cocker spaniel, or a dachshund.

@MisterS i dont care what breed bites me. If a dog bites me and I have a side arm that dog is dead.

The breed of dog didn't have to be mentioned in the headline at all, but it's one of those "understood" things. Maybe a byline could be included in such stories like... "unless otherwise noted, the dog is a pitbull". Yes, it's the testosterone loaded (x2) owners of these animals who are at fault, but they never pay the final price. Aren't you proud of your uncontrollable puppy?
