BC Teachers' Federation president stepping down
VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)

After 40 years in the classroom and three as the BC Teachers' Federation president, Susan Lambert says she'll bow out at the end of the school year.

"Three years is the longest that a president can stay in office. So this is the end of my three years and I'll be stepping down come the end of June."

She says she has no plans so far after that, except to serve as past president, and spend more time with her grandchildren.

Lambert says leading the union through the last grueling labour dispute with the government was a challenge, but well worth it.

So who will step up? How about that guy who challenged her last year?

Hopefully the BCTF willuse this as an opportunity to vote. In someone that can represent them in a constructive manner !

@ChrisM_18 It would be nice to have someone on board that looked at what is required to educate the children at school and leave the politicking to the politicians and the parents.

@ChrisM_18 now correct me if im wrong but its not the BCTF ( as in every paying member) that votes in a new leader but the delegates (aka zealots) that vote in the leader.

Maybe the B.C. Federation of Labour should have the same rules.

If the Dippers win, maybe Lambert will be appointed Education Deputy Minister; what a disaster that would be!

@StephenG_3 Well you do agree your corruption of the past yr will end! Then you blame Susan Lambert! haha More Liberal Spin, you guys are priceless !Go NDP Go

@StephenG_3 Makes more sense to me to have a teacher in charge of running education, a doctor running the medical system and an accountant in finance.

Doesn't make sense to hand out portfolios to people with no experience in that vain. A lawyer running agriculture, a farmer running the schools, and a teacher as attorney general has never made sense to me, but that seems to be how it's done.

Yippee!! Hopefully she'll be replaced with someone with a rational, not radical, outlook.......but I doubt it.

BCTF First Vice-President Jim Iker is running uncontested right now to replace her.

Tough to believe anything will change with the BCTF however given their history. They haven't gotten along with any government yet : Socred, NDP or Liberal.

There are some major flaws within the union, including moderate members feeling bullied and cast aside at conventions, and local meetings. Unfortunately the loudest voices are also the most radical in a lot of unions, but by the first hand accounts I've heard from teachers that have attended both levels of meetings, their union seems worse for these tactics, than some of the supposedly more radical unions we've heard about in the past.

@RichardF_4221 Ken280 will come here and comment that they do and will get along with the NDP.

The BCTF is such a large union that they see themselves at member strong so they can make large demands. Perhaps a province-wide teachers union isn't necessary. Perhaps a union for Metro Vancouver teachers and a union for outside the MVR.

YAAAAYYYYY!!! Now if the BC Nurses Union woudl boot Deb McPherson out maybe we could have leadership at these two important unions that would put the kids and the patients first, instead of their massive out of control egos.
    1. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/15/2013 09:17 PM
@Cin_3294 But someone in these unions must have elected them in the first place. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and unfortunately when someone tells you they will give you a voice, they'll usually get the vote.
If you've ever been to a serious union meeting or convention, you've noticed that the loudest people are the ones that are against anything that looks like caving to the company.
I've been to union meetings where a company showed the books and how close they were to insolvency. Most guys were considering just leaving things alone, "hey they've been good to us over the years, I love working here, I need this job". Then there were the bravado guys that yelled and screamed so much that they swayed the undecided to vote for a strike.
Same happened at Kenworth in St Therese Quebec. The company told them that if they went on strike, they'd close the plant and move it out of Canada. In August 95 they went on strike, in April 96 the company closed the plant and moved production to Mexico.

Perhaps she's been offered at position with the NDP if they form government.

@4645 Correction the NDP will form the next government, hands down.

Your funny Ken! A NDP win means Jim SinClair CORRUPTION!

@joes_2868 Not sure with the delicate economy and government purse close to empty how big unions are going to be able to run the government.

There's only so much to give.

I think the best scenario would be a total audit of government service costs and future requirements.

For example, if 10 hospitals need MRI machines, wouldn't it make sense to go to the manufacturers and tell them, we're going to buy 10 machines this year. Give us your best price. Go with the best price for the best machine. Why do we one piece ourselves to death? Same with buses. Each year BC likely buys 100 buses for BC Transit in various forms. Why can't we get a bulk 100 bus deal through BC Transit and then sell them at cost to the various entities running buses for BC Transit/Translink etc?

BC Ferries. Why on smaller routes beyond bitching and complaining are we running a ferry every hour with only a few cars on it? The fuel costs more than the 4 or 5 workers do. Pay them to sit until there's a need for a few hours during the middle of the day. People will get used to it. In the summer they shuttle short routes to keep the back log down, so it's not like they don't service when they need to.

Just so many places that government money is wasted. Why? Because it's easier to just keep doing what we are doing.

@joes_2868 Oh joes you are so predictable, but uninformed. You didnt know Adrian is now in bed with Catalyst Paper. Who recently threatened layoff of so many including cutting off pensions to retired staff members to get what they have wanted all along. A huge rollback just like Walmart. Yeh they got their rollback after destroying one Island community and threatening three others. and yep Adrian is in T O with Catalyst for the release of its new and improved stock. The unionists are being duped by the NDP right now, thinking the NDP will protect them when in fact the NDP in my view has nothing but disdain for its former relationship with Unions. But they sure arent going to turn down the unwarranted support.

An opportunity now for the majority of teachers who are true professionals to get someone else into that critical position that will act with integrity, honesty and represent their true needs. A great opportunity for positive change.

woo hoo!!! GREATEST NEWS OF THE DAY!!!!
Finally the WORST BCTF pres yet - finally gone to granny land!
Way too late though - after the teachers let her rip apart their reputations and lose any professional respect they deserved!

good thing they have the 3 year rule......

@speakup Who is worse, Lambert or Ginny Sims?

I would love to see a brave sole introduce and hold a vote to get rid of the Union altogether. Things worked much better before these thugs controlled everything and teachers were much less political
    1. Cin_3294 posted on 03/16/2013 04:47 PM
@AnneH_4 really, you would like a fish to have a vote?

from your spelling I'd guess you were taught by someone protected by this laughable union.
