Court hears the case of convicted rioter accused of breaching conditions

She'd been drinking and she was dressed to go out.  That's how the police officer who arrested Camille Cacnio is describing the convicted Stanley Cup rioter who violated her curfew in January.

Vancouver Police Constable Barry Selver says he pulled Cacnio over during a routine road check in Gastown and smelled alcohol on her breath after she told him she hadn't been drinking.

When he ran her name through a police computer, he discovered the woman driving in the opposite direction of her home was 20 minutes past the curfew set when she was spared jail time in September.

He also noticed she was dressed up.

Selver says Cacnio did not show any signs of being in medical distress and when he asked her why she lied about drinking, she told him she didn't think the two margaritas she'd had earlier that evening were still in her system.

Earlier today, her lawyer tried to have the trial closed to media claiming his client suffers from depression.

Gee...poor girl. Such a horrible thing. Is her license on note too? You go to a bar, they swipe your license and then it flashes that you're on curfew? I would love to see that.

Her lawyer, Jason Tarnow, is a family friend....jeez Jason that's stretch, I thought better of you, after this....why bother defending these idiot sticks? Let her spend a few in the sin bin, teach her a lesson, it's long term befefits are huge for a little short term suffering, your still gonna get paid, do what's right for society, she's a criminal.. Same goes for that drunk in Delta your defending in Delta that killed that little girl..buddy, your embarrassing yourself.

@taxed to death be fair, Mr Tarnow's duty is to his client, not society. His job is to defend her wether we agree or not, within the boundaries of the law.

This young woman got caught twice. The first time she was looting a store and got a slap on the wrist. The second time she was flipping a bird to the justice system by being out past her curfew and is now insulting the intelligence of the judge with her argument.

Fool the court once, shame on her. Fool the court twice, shame on the court……….

@RobK_3 Just like the Liberals/Cons of the coalition! Now there should be hard jail time for them! Go NDP GO

Messages to the Judges. ..... Your lenient wrist slapping isn't working as a rehabilative deterrent let alone a punishment ! Time to step it up a notch or two !!

@ChrisM_18 Unfortunately our court system is one that precedance is everything in most cases. Very rarely a judge steps out of the boundaries of precedance presented to them.

A judge is limited by previous cases. Unless federal politicians change minimum sentences on criminal cases, a judge can only rely on what is presented to them in court. If the prosecution asks for a year, and defence asks for a $10 fine, it comes down to precedance presented by both sides supporting their sentencing request. Usually the judge has to rule between these two extremes, no matter how far apart or how close they are.

I'm not surprised she is "depressed"; she is charged with violating a court order and will now likely go to jail if convicted. This apparent flaggrant violation of her earlier sentence shows she has no respect for court orders, and will very likely get some time to think about it.

If she gets jail time let it be on weekends.

@howards_1187 or everynight after 10 pm for a year ? Without the margaritas of course.

a scathing editorial of our justice system.

margaritas and going the wrong way after curfew...

funny thing is, it's still going to be a toss up if she wins or loses.

I think the best stories never heard by the most people, might just be the ones in Canadian Courts.

We don't have a justice system. Instead we have a legal system and it consists of out of touch judges and lawyers who will argue semantics and disregard the truth and common sense. Anyone who believes that justice will be served by this corrupt group of elitist is sadly mistaken.

Here's an idea that will get the attention of these poor darlins'... if any of the convicted rioters are found in violation of their court ordered conditions they are immediately arrested, put into jail until a court hearing regardless of how long it takes and then they are sentenced to the maximum allowed for their riot offenses.

Obviously listening to their claims of making a mistake, etc. is not working.

This is proof that the lenient conditional sentencing the rioters have been given are seen by them as a joke. Why aren't they being given jail time plus being ordered to make restitution payment? They need to learn that alcohol impairs judgement - ask any judge.
