No further action against prominent lawyer

The BC Law Society has decided not to take any further action against prominent lawyer Terry La Liberte, because he's addressed his alcoholism in a meaningful way.

The Law Society began investigating after La Liberte assaulted several people during a drunken argument with a female acquitance in November of 2011.

He was charged, the case was diverted, and he apologized to everyone involved, including the police officers.

La Liberte has publically admitted he's an alcoholic and the Law Society says he is actively participating in a monitored recovery agreement and has agreed to random alcohol and drug testing.

For what the law society calls his serious, determined, and sustained effort to ensure it will never happen again, it's decided a disciplinary citation is not necessary.

It figures !! Clearly the upper crust have one up on the great unwashed. If I ever get into a jam such as his, I want the same treatment . Talk about a bunch of hypocrites !!!

@ Brian WA If this guy had been a gang member this wouldn't have been a story.
I also think the great unwashed gets similar treatment.
Every-one makes mistakes, putting this man in jail would cost a ton of money (remember it cast as much to keep a man in jail for a year as it does to send them to school at Harvard) and done nothing for society except fill our need for revenge.

@ Brian WA This news article is about the Law Societry not pursuing discipline against one of their members. It is not about the criminal assault accusations. Therefore, has this has nothing to do with the treatment of the "unwashed" being more stringent that the "upper crust". And therefore the "hypocrites" accusation is completely irrelevant.

I think Terry is probably getting far more publicity than the average schmuck would for the same crimes ... but then Terry is in a position of having the ability to significantly impact others lives ... so he has a higher standard to meet

Somewhat unrelated , but still an issue regarding our wonderful leagal system ... I wonder what will happen to all the Stanley Cup rioters that have been found violating the terms of the court sentences ?? I have been thoroughly disgusted by the wrist slaps handed out to date .. so now that the Judges and the court system are getting shown what people really think of them, perhaps a little less leniancy is in order ??
