Vancouver City Council has voted to forge ahead on an official New Years Eve event to be held in the downtown core.

NPA Councillor George Affleck tabled the motion to try and hold a world class new year's event in Vancouver.

"I am hopeful that as was mentioned by a couple councillors the wheels are already in motion behind the scenes so hopefully we can have something this year. I think it is important that we don't overthink what could be this New Years. As I have said I think a clock downtown and some proper policing and closing off some streets. Doesn't have to be very complicated lets just get going on it and have a fun time New Years eve."

Affleck says while he wants a more neighbourly celebration he is not against it becoming a tourist attraction.

The city has hosted on again and off again New Year's celebrations over the years.

How about focusing on more press issues like homelessness, hunger and affordable housing. That`s where City Hall should be splashing the cash. Always seem to have money to spend by trying to make Vancouver look like a fun city.

Every time I hear or read the phrase "world class" I just shake my head. No other phrase speaks so clearly to the feelings of inadequacy and inferiority that most Vancouuverites seem to harbour !!
An event is only worth considering if it is "world class " !!! BS !! We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - we don't need to try to be as good. As everybody else. We should just be ourselves and worry about conducting events that cater to as many of our population as possible !!

Oh you mean like First Night?
Ya, that was a raging success of astronomically embarrassing moments in the wee life of Vancouver.
