As a number of environmental groups call for a hike in the carbon tax BC's Environment minister says the idea is interesting but the timing stinks.

Terry Lake says he appreciates the case made by the group, led by Tides Canada, but to hike the carbon tax now is simply not the right time.

"We need to make sure that we are, again, making those steps at the right time we are encouraging other jurisdictions to catch up to us and Washington State, Oregon are talking about it, Alberta is having discussions about raising their carbon tax on heavy emitters so I look forward to those days because I think it make it lot easier for us to make those advances."

Lake says bc is at a competitive disadvantage with the carbon tax because those other jurisdictions are so far behind.

"Although it would certainly help us in terms of reaching our targets unfortunately it does put us in a more uncompetitive position so when the economy is fragile that is a very challenging thing to do."

Lake also says while there is broad support for climate change initiatives, there is a caveat "But when it comes to the individual person having to pay the price the dial changes a little bit."

Lake says the economy is also a factor, as is the impact the carbon tax causes on other industries.

"Agriculture for instance, mining, forestry, and with the return to the PST you know the competiveness issues have reared their head again so while I appreciate ideas in the document timing is very important and until we can get the rest of the world to catch up to us it is a difficult step to make."

The group Environmental interests says increasing the carbon tax will help fund transit and create green jobs.

I'd tend to agree with Lake on this one. But let's take it further. Eliminate the carbon tax (or at least take steps to lower it). It is an unfair tax for those that live in rural or northern areas.

@BlakeN I agree BlakeN people outside the lower mainland do get beatup on this tax. People in the lowermainland have no idea the distances those in the interior need to drive. If this tax is to encourage people to drive less there has to be some alternative at this point is no alternative, to getting to the locations people work at. Lake should know this.

Well that's a polite way to say "are you out of your bloody mind ?"

Message to the environmentalists - NO MORE TAXES !!!

Now do you think Dix and company are going to take the same tact ?? Not likely !

@ChrisM_18 No choice. If he hikes fuel prices, he'll strangle business and tourism in one shot. He will need to be very careful and it will take a lot to keep things somewhat stable.

I love this environmental group claiming that the carbon tax will help fund transit... the government has clearly stated they will NOT be using the carbon tax for transit. Not exactly up to this enviro group to make claims like that now is it...

Vote BC Conservatives, they will be phasing out the carbon tax.

Carbon off set and carbon taxes are the craziest things humans have come up with.
It's really just another income stream for the government. Yet we pay.

People, do some research on UN Agenda 21 and TIDES. Carbon taxes and offsets are a scam. We're supposed to feel guilty about our lifestyle that we are hemmed into and gladly pay more taxes. Even if CO2 from man was having an effect on the environment, the carbon taxes and offsets are doing anything to help. They are simply a means of transferring wealth from the many to the very few elites.

Carbon trading, carbon tax, and carbon offsets make about as much sense as telling kids to only pee in one side of a swimming pool.

If burning fossil fuels is such a bad idea, why does B.C. continue to allow more and more drive thru windows? I see the 10 min lines at Starbucks and Tim Hortons, and think burning gas must be good for the environment as there is nobody stopping more and more being built.

Here are where the goverment is spending its money instead of health care and education.

@howards_1187 The money collected from gouging the carbon tax out of us is pissed away on what could be best called make work projects by BC corporations

@howards_1187 LOL!!! So are you suggesting that we take the word of special interest groups who want to raise our carbon taxes even more than what we pay now.Your post sounds like "spin".Health care and education funding are the only two ministries that get more funding every year.Do not trust the enviro groups people. They all want you to pay more taxes. They will give them different names, but they still come out of your pocket.
Also remember that many of these so called enviro groups are being funded by "charitable foundations" in the USA.You should be suspicious of that too.

fund transit???? maybe if they use trolleys. If they buy Natural gas or diesel busses no way. try to use buses that use electricity. 0 emissions . Natural gas or diesel buses. I thought the carbon tax was supposed to be revenue neutral.
Not to become another way for any government to collect more tax money?
    1. DougB_25 posted on 03/08/2013 11:09 AM
@LaurieS_3 Not necessarily a bad idea. But you have to know that trolley buses cost more than $750,000 per.Almost twice as much as a diesel bus.And they cannot operate outside of Vancouver and Burnaby. To do that, they would have to spend billions of dollars to built overhead power lines. Not to mention more electrical power generating capacity.Your suggestion is not as easy as it sounds.

The BC Conservatives are the only party who will kill the carbon tax. They are getting my vote.
    1. MichaelD_10 posted on 03/08/2013 12:40 PM
@Specimen Yarp It would be good to have a new free enterprise government. I hope the folks in BC can get away from the main stream media telling us the NDP are a shoe in.
Only one poll counts and that is on election day. I hope more than 50 percent show up to vote.
Just because global TV is telling us the NDP will form the next government. Does not mean its so

Carbon taxes and offsets are a scam at best.
There is a professor who was at UVIC (not sure if he's still there) who panned the whole idea of global warming.
Part of his argument is the history of warming and cooling of the earth naturally, saying that we are over due for a warming period before going back into another cooling cycle.
Another argument he put forward was that all the green initiatives done in the previous 5 years were wiped out twice over by the Icelandic volcano in 2010.
There are green initiatives worth looking at such as green roof and wall gardens in urban areas, and more efficient cars.
Some of the scams that go unnoticed are "Energy Star" appliances. Many people buy an energy star appliance thinking they'll save money in the long run. You won't.
Repair of older cars, appliances, and other easily repaired items is far better for the environment than buying newer and better.

@RichardF_4221 I have been running a fifties era freezer for 30 years works way better than any of the newer freezers.
When I bought it in 1980 for $20 bucks, I had no idea I might be using it 30 + years later.

is canadian an enviromental polluting country? yes and no . we are but a drop in a bucket of water , however we help polluting throught the world with the exporting of our coal and oil and potash resourses. cities such as LA , MOSCOW , CAIRO , CHINESE CITIES TOO MANY TO LIST , INDIA CITIES TO MANY TO LIST , SOUTH AMERICAN CITIES , LATIN AMERICAN CITIES , all pollute far more than the whole of canada.

Don't even bother Terry as you will be out on your ass, come May.
    1. BlakeN posted on 03/10/2013 06:47 PM
@bctaxpayer That is true. That doesn't mean we can afford any new taxes. We are going to be on a fiscal tightrope for the next eight+ years. There needs to be a stepped plan to remove the Carbon tax and a huge amount of decisions that are going to be very painful. No easy way to deal with the mess we are in.
