The acting mayor of New Westminster says concerns are rising as traffic floods across the Pattullo Bridge and into his city.

Councillor Jamie McEvoy say since the new tolled Port Mann Bridge opened the traffic flow has drastically increased.

"You can just see the change with your own eyes when you live in the city or when you drive through the city there is no doubt that the traffic is much slower especially around the evening rush hour there is no doubt there is a lot more cars out there. You know we are getting a lot more complaints to from people who are just trying to trasnport good through the city and that sort of thing that it has become that much more difficult now."

McEvoy says the city is now looking at its options to try and stem the tide of cars and trucks.

"We have also looked at whether or not we should have tolls on the Pattullo bridge right now under provincial legislation it is not allowed but legislation can always be changed but there is some thinking in the city that if we had tolls on the Pattullo bridge it might even the field some what."

McEvoy says he is really worried about what the increase in traffic means for safety on the road and for pedestrians.

He says New West already has a higher the provincial average rate of pedestrian related car accidents.

We have got a number of bad intersections that have regular problems so what is happening is you have a small city picking up a big cities traffic problems and you know from our police department to our fire department to our road service it has a big affect on New Westminster."

McEvoy says New West is in talks with Surrey and Translink to find a solution to the traffic problem.

How about the politicians learn to live within their means, just like us poor saps that pay the freight. It's getting near time for a tax rebellion instead of trying to pull more money out of the beleaguered taxpayers skinny wallets. I am getting more than a little fed up with being treated like an ATM with an unlimited line of credit.

Tolls are not allowed, and will not be...the Liberals will enough problems getting votes, and the NDP will turn a deaf ear to that one.
As for safety, the increase has been recent whereas you pedestrian problem has been on-going for some time...and if you have a number of bad intersections, perhaps your focus should be on fixing your problems, not tolling others to pay it.
Regarding talks, funny how New West is willing to talk now...but refused when it came to replacing/expanding the Puttullo; gotta love self-interested politicians.

Sure WHY not - why let people try to get to work and park and maintain their vehicles - TOLL THE SUCKERS!!
Like shooting fish in a barrel! BA - BAMM!!!!

I suggest ALL politicians should PAY BIG BIG TOLLS to park their fancy ass cars at work! Maybe then that would supplement the rest of us suckers simply trying to just get to work without paying TROLLS!

I'm all for tolling every bridge at 50 cents a crossing. A better way to pay for transport infrastructure.

@RayA_5 we already PAY and PAY over and over!!!!!
Bridges in our cities bewtween water - should NOT EVER be tolled - not even 50 cents!

Use some of the LOTTO monies to pay if they need more!
Where EXCATLY does all this LOTTO money going anyways?
What did we ever do before we had LOTTOS!
I would support an JUST FOR ROADS/BRIDGES (no TOLLS) LOTTO!!!!!

Drivers/Tax payers /REAL people - CANNOT AFFORD ANYMORE TOLLS!!!! NOT NOW NOT EVER! NO TOLLS IN BC!
Tools only for tool slike you - oh 50 cents is OK!!!!
Do you have NAY idea how much MOre IT WOULD SIMPLY COTS TO collecT THIS 50 CENTS FROM EVERYBODY!???!?!?

The worst part about these TROLLS that collect these tolls is..........
the collection costs (administration and protection of info - which has already been compromised) costs MORE than the buyilding and maintaining of these TROLLING projects!
The more you feed the TROLL
      the MORE HUNGRIER they get

      STOP buying into the BS
      Just say NO!
      DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS!

Seriously? So his solution is to start a tolling war? If a toll is allowed, I suggest he use the proceeds to build a giant wall around his great city to keep out all of us plebs.

I'm sincerely sorry that I have to risk my life every morning to cross a rickety old bridge and then drive on your terrible roads so I can get to work. Please allow me to pay you for this great privilege.

Punish people for driving on the bridge and streets that they have paid for? Brilliant.

    NO TOLLS!!!!

The economy has slowed down greatly and the private sector has cut back accordingly. But the government just keeps on going at the same rate. Why does the government never scale back it's scope and size? It only looks at new ways of generating revenue. It is like a cancer on our society that needs to be dealt with. The more we feed it, the more it wants.

As long as the money goes to a specific Patullo replacement fund I am cool with it. Also it has to be darn low like $2 or less.

I don't get what's wrong with letting people sit in traffic 4 hours a day. People who don't want to pay tolls, don't force them. They'll bicker either way. Let them wait in line to cross the bridge.

Put a dollar toll on every bridge / tunnel leading in and out of the Lower Mainland and TRY to make a level playing field. 9 bridges / tunnels @ 750,000 vehicles X 2 per day = approx. $1,350,000.00 in tolls daily or approx. $475,000,000.00 per year. Plus the toll that has to be put on the Sea to Sky Hwy. @ $1.00 each way to Squamish plus $5.00 each way to Whistler from Squamish.
In total tolls should amount to 1/2 Billion per year - wouldn't this be enough to cover maintenance & future funding of the system???
