The Mayor of Surrey is again raising concerns about the impact of tolling the Port Mann bridge on other crossings in her city.

Dianne Watts says early numbers are not good.

"The numbers that I got from the BC Trucking Association, they've monitored about a 25 per cent diversion onto the Pattullo Bridge which again is problematic because again it is coming through Surrey and through New Westminster and going that way."

Watts was speaking after chairing the first meeting of a new Metro Vancouver Transportation committee.

That's also where Translink executives reported region-wide service expansion could cost as much as an extra 700-million dollars every year.

This should be no of surprise to anyone and especially the Mayor of Surrey who has been aware of this obvious scenario since day one.

It's the lower mainland version of "whack a mole" , with drivers popping up on untolled bridges!

Now which brilliant Politician is going to do something about this mess? Unfortunately it will take a serious accident maybe even a fatality. This bridge has been called the death bridge before last December - now at 25% more volume it is only a waiting game. Roadways on both sides of this bridge are not designed for this amount of volume either
    .
Put a dollar toll on every bridge / tunnel leading in and out of the Lower Mainland and TRY to make a level playing field. 9 bridges / tunnels @ 750,000 vehicles X 2 per day = approx. $1,350,000.00 in tolls daily or approx. $475,000,000.00 per year. Plus the toll that has to be put on the Sea to Sky Hwy. @ $1.00 each way to Squamish plus $5.00 each way to Whistler from Squamish.
In total tolls should amount to 1/2 Billion per year - wouldn't this be enough to cover maintenance & future funding of the system???

@JimN I've already [aid for those bridges via gas taxes. I don't intend to pay for them again!

Another issue is that many of those trucks will take both lanes on the pattullo because they don't want cars to pass them. That slows everyone down

Of course, we told them this when they they decided to go with tolling the port mann but they don't listen to common sense

Really Dianne, you are acting concerned now? You have been aware of this issue for years.

The Mayors board for planning Tranit is an absolute joke! What education does Ms. Watts have to be planning and spending our tax dollars on Transit? The Mayors board should be gone, regarding transportation!

And people think Watts should run for Premier!

@JanelleJ She's been bringing it up for years too. What's your point?
