Liberals reject idea of moving fixed election date
VICTORIA/CKNW (AM980)

3/6/2013

The Liberal government is saying "no" to moving BC's set election date to the fall, but the NDP says it's a great idea.

Independent MLA's are calling for the change beginning in 2017 saying a fall election sees the budget already passed and the previous year's audited books available to the public.

But Deputy Premier Rich Coleman is not interested.

"There's no time in the legislative calendar to change it, and that's a discussion for another day."

However NDP House Leader John Horgan says the idea makes sense and an NDP government would make the change if elected in May.

"A government with a new mandate is in a better position to make the case to the public that adding three months to a four year mandate is reasonable."

Horgan says the proposal will be in the NDP platform.

@bctaxpayer I second the comment by Reality Check.Come on folks. Most growen ups know that if you want a civil answer you have to ask a civil question.I don't likethe fact that those dollars were spent that way either.Answers were provided that I also found did not satisfy my curiosity. But there are legal issues surrounding client lawyer confidentiality. Those legal issue apply in EVERY case ,for ALL of us.Unless there are major changes to the justice system, you are flogging a dead horse.
Next in the agenda.A question for Ticky Dixie."If and when you are elected, will you return the severence pay that you took when you resigned in disgrace after your last job in government"?? I do not think lawyer/client confidentiality applies in that case.

    What did he say???
there is no time to change it????

WHY? Because you guys work so hard and sit in the legislature waaaaaay too much? Is that it?

Good grief! The more I hear, the more I want to vomit.....jerk!

@michael_4092 Michael do you even know how legislature work?

With only less than a month left, there isn't enough debate, discussion and public consultation for this kind of change. Plus there are MUCH more things to be passed before this.

Makes sense. I am a Liberal supporter and fail to understand why there would be an issue with a Fall election. I like the idea of the fixed date and based upon the fact that the budge tis such a massive platform for any party looking to be be elected, it makes sense to have a fully vetted document that stands the test of open debate and factual or non-factual assessments. This may be the only good idea from the NDP.

@Reality Check Yes! we know your a Liberal supporter and when someone puts them down you have something to say! On the other hand when someone puts down a NDP supporter with lots of names calling and belittling from Liberal supporters or Cons you say nothing! Is it that the Liberal/Cons of the coalition are one of the same,Cons/Liberals of the coalition! same Sh*te different pile! Soon to have you as there supporter also! Go NDP Go

@KenL_6250 Coleman will still be an MLA after the election. Even if the Liberals do not regain control, he will still be elected.
  5. SpiltB posted on 03/06/2013 03:25 PM
I think it makes sence to change it now. I really am against the change being made by the NDP after the election, as it reeks of an opportunistic move to extend their work/pensions by 3 extra months. If the NDP do move it later, it should not apply for the 2017 general election, but for the 2021 at the earliest. The Libs should move it now in time for the 2017 election. Rich Coleman is an idiot, and sadly I live in this fatheads riding.
    1. michael_4092 posted on 03/06/2013 03:42 PM
@SpiltB Ummm.. well wouldn't the move extend whoever is in power by 3 months REGARDLESS?
Oh, you're just upset if the NDP do it?
      You're a moron.
  6. 4645 posted on 03/06/2013 03:33 PM
The NDP will remove the fixed election date legislation along with the balance budget legislation. They will promise to bring in new fixed election date legislation with a fall date but somehow there will never be enough time giving the NDP more flexibility when they are in power.
    1. Reality Check posted on 03/06/2013 03:53 PM
@4645 I think if I was an NDP strategist, I would be advising the Dix to keep your mouth closed, don't worry about talking platform, just let the Liberal party self distruct as they appear to be doing at a rapid pace ! I have not heard much response from either the Liberals or NDP or even Green on the Conservative budget platform.
  7. brianp1950 posted on 03/06/2013 03:40 PM
Of course you would not want to change the date, I mean why be open and transparent? way better keeping people in the dark when it comes to their money you guys pilfer and then pretend it is yours to give to your friends.

Realty Check: Bctaxpayer does not know any better. A very sad state of affairs when he constantly says that B.C. will have a NDP government and Adrian Dix is saying that the election will be a nail biter.
    1. Ken280 posted on 03/06/2013 04:53 PM
@joes_2868 Not anymore is he saying that! They do intend to win and have more dirt ready to spring out after the election call is made, reason so the Liberals do not steal their ideas! They find it very hard to find ideas of their own these days!! ! Thumper the blue grouse in heat, get used to it! Go NDP Go

This press invented story has abolutely no point to it anyway. The date can't be changed now. I would'nt be surprised if the ballots were'nt at the printers by now. End this foolishness.
    1. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/06/2013 05:23 PM
@Ron_26 The date change is being proposed for the election in 2017, not this year's.

In anyone even listening to the Libs. As milk has a best before date on it so should this present Govt....and it's long past!
They don't even sound like an opposition party.
The Cons are feeling frisky now that the latest ethnicgate bomb has dropped.
    Good grief!
  13. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/06/2013 05:19 PM
Maybe things like this should be brought up earlier in the legislative session when it could be pushed through all three readings, votes, and royal assent. With other more pressing matters in front of the house, I'd think changing the date of the election is not all that important.
Only brought up now to attempt to make the government look bad in the eyes of people that are gullible.
Any opposition almost always throws out "quick and easy" mac & cheese ideas near the end of a legislative session knowing that most people don't really know how the process works. Just another way to take a cheap shot at the government in the eyes of the uninformed voters.

Truly, yet another non-issue. Even the NDP House Leader John Horgan is quoted as saying "A government with a new mandate is in a better position to make the case to the public that adding three months to a four year mandate is reasonable."

Ken would you please answer the following questions for the readers. You are always avoiding the issue.

WHY DID THE DAVE BARRETT NDP GOVERNMENT IN B.C. ONLY LAST ONE TERM?

WHY DID THE GLEN CLARK NDP GOVERNMENT IN B.C. ONLY WIN THE RE-ELECTION BY A 3 SEAT MAJORITY OVER THE OPPOSITION?

WHY DID THE OFFICIAL OPPOSITION IN SASKATCHEWAN, THE NDP HAVE 20 SEATS BEFORE THE ELECTION CALL AND AFTER THE ELECTION HAD ONLY 9 SEATS?

WHY DID THE BOB RAE NDP GOVERNMENT IN ONTARIO ONLY LAST ONE TERM?

WHY IS THE NDP GOVERNMENT IN NOVA SCOTIA ONLY GOING TO BE A ONE TIME WONDER?

IF YOUR NDP IS SO POPULAR, THEN WHY IS THERE ONLY 4 NDP SEATS IN THE ALBERTA LEGISLATURE, NONE IN QUEBEC, NEW BRUNSWICK, AND PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, 5 NDP SEATS IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND ONLY 17 NDP SEATS IN ONTARIO?

MOE SIHOTA, WOULD ONLY DO THE JOB AS NDP PRESIDENT FOR A SALARY. WHY DIDN'T THE NDP THEN SHOW HIM THE DOOR?

KEN, WHY WOULD YOU NEVER TAKE BACK A FORMER SPOUSE FROM A PREVIOUS DIVORCE TO RE-CREATE THE NIGHTMARE, BUT ARE WILLING TO DO IT WITH GOVERNMENT?

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START PRACTICING WHAT YOU PREACH?

Here's your chance to beat Adrian Dix to the punch.

LOL!! I think the fall election idea is a no brainer. And I also think all of the parties agree on that. All this noise is jist about is WHEN to make the change. One party is going to get an extra few months in office. Is it a shock to anyone that they are arguing about which one it will be?? I can almost hear the NDP howls of contempt had the Liberals used their majority to extend this mandate into September. Now that the NDP seems likely to win this time around, suddenly it's a great idea.
This is just schoolyard political grandstanding.

@joes_2868 We all know Ken280's answer's though they may not make sense with the context he types them. Bottom line is the NDP does no wrong, anyone else is evil and ruining the world. Anyone who doesn't agree with him is a liar/con artist and facist supporting the Liberals.
It is entertaining to read the new way he words the same endless loop message each time though.

"GO NDP GO". How so? The NDP need 49% plus of the popular vote to win government and Adrian Dix will have to do a lot of explaining of the NDP blunders in Manitoba and Nova Scotia costing taxpayers mega dollars since he had dinner with those two stooges, Greg Selinger and Darrell Dexter.
