The Ministry of Transportation will hold public hearings next week on its long range plan to replace the George Massey tunnel.

It's called phase two of public consultation, and it includes meetings in Richmond, Surrey and Delta from next Wednesday through Saturday.

Phase one of that consultation in December saw  eleven hundred people weigh in, and 80 percent identified congestion in the tunnel as their main concern, with traffic queues up to five kilometers long during rush hour.

The Massey tunnel was built in 1959, and now sees more than 80-thousand vehicles pass through on a daily basis.

I hope the process moves along quickly, we need a replacement to the tunnel sooner than later.

As I told Ron_26 If the Port Mann cost 1.5 Billion and tolls are 3-4 $$ and the tunnel cost 3 Billion will the tolls be 6- 8 $ one way.Ron was not sure if he understood that difficult math formula.

@bctaxpayer You should run for government. Apparently you see things so simply. Tolls are not determined by just the cost of projects, but maintenance, money invested and type of bridges and tunnels used.

You will not see the tolls announced anytime soon until full costs and maintenance is determined.

I have a feeling that only the Liberals is willing to build new infrastructure, NDP will just let it die off.

I drive through the tunnel to get to and from work Monday through Friday. For the most part the majority of congestion occurs right before the tunnel on either side due to poorly thought out and designed merges.
North, south.. it matters not the lane configuration makes no sense whatsoever. I certainly hope that when they do decide on a replacement that it is a bridge, not a tunnel, and that they make some significant changes to the on ramps to that section of highway 99.

Great... another billion dollar project. We can,t even pay for what we have now. Anybody remember BC has only about 4 million population. do the math.
want want want. sounds like a bunch of kids, and all of us have no more tax bucks to shell out.
