Police across British Columbia are reporting disappointing results from their latest campaign to nab distracted drivers.

In February, more than 5600 tickets were handed out province-wide.

Investigators say too many drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by choosing to ignore the rules.

RCMP Corporal Robert McDonald with the Lower Mainland District Traffic Services says even when warning signs were posted in Delta, almost 50 violators were recorded in one day.

Across bc, 5514 tickets were issued to people caught using electronic devices while driving, along with 103 for driving without due care.

More blitzes are planned throughout the year.

Low hanging fruit for Revenue Collecting Motorized Patrol.
Why not uphold all ROTR rather than just the easy ones?
Answer? 5600 tickets at $100+ each.

@UnemployedinBC Yup. Every day I see large logging trucks and chip trucks run red lights in Prince George, never see them pulled over. But pick up a cell phone to look at it while sitting still at a red light and bam, you get a ticket.

Happy to hear that they are actually ticketing people for distracted driving. I would be even happier to see enforcement of every traffic law increased as well as enforcement in general is sorely lacking.

    what was that story about......
sorry I was driving and distracted by
    - sipping my coffee
    - eating my lunch
    - checking my hair in the mirror
    - changing radio stations
    - reading hte radio text
    - checking and changing my GPS info
BUT I would NEVER even look at my cell phone!

How do the cops find time for all these tickets??
they would have to peel themselves away from all the TOYS they play with in their cars..................

Right on! Glad to hear these drivers getting ticketed. As a pedestrian/transit user, I have had very close calls with cars. They drive without due care and attention: head down looking at their cells, getting way too close to pedestrians when making left-hand turns, etc.

What I would change is how drivers pay their fines. Make them pay via interac/credit card on the spot. Never mind trying to collect payments later.
