Response to boat aground in English Bay takes Sea Island Coast Guard over half an hour

It took the Sea-Island coast guard thirty-one minutes to respond to a boat that had run aground in English Bay Saturday afternoon.  Crews left the base at 4:39pm, arriving on scene at 5:10.

Coast Guard officials say if crews had been at the now closed Kitsilano Coast Guard Base, the response time would have been mere minutes.

But officials say even when it was open, resources weren't always at the base as crews were often out patrolling or on other calls.

David Dahlgen says stormy waters caused some delay in Saturday's response.

"It was simply, I wouldn't say a derelict vessel, but simply a vessel adrift.  It didn't power ashore, it looks like it broke loose from its moorings due to the weather conditions."

Dahlgen says

Volunteer coast guard crews from horseshoe bay were also called, and made it to there in 11 minutes.

A police boat was on scene, but because no one could tell if there was someone aboard the boat, they had to wait for the Coast Guard.

“We know that things are different now,” say Coast Guard crews, adding things haven’t been too busy since the Kits based closed, and the summer will be the true test of what response will be like without the base.

Wow you guys are really milking this non-story. Your own story says the Coast Guard arrived in 11 minutes. The secondary vessel arrived in 1/2 hour, so the Coast Guard responded in yesterday's weather within 11 minutes. That's pretty good by any standards. They can't babysit every vessel on the water and be right on scene the second disaster strikes..

"But officials say even when it was open, resources weren't always at the base as crews were often out patrolling or on other calls"

And therein lies the rub! The coast guard is on the water most of the time, not sitting at the Jericho station. The actual physical building is being torn down but the assets (boats and crews) are still here.

    Where's the story?

@Newshound59 Well Newshound there you go again the only issue that you comment on is the Coast Guard situation.
Well sounds to me you have a vested intrest in this ie: Government Intrest, no one else seems to say the same things as you.
If you really cared about the situation you would take an unbiased look at the situation and see what happens in the near future. Not jump and say all is O.K. with The Feds Decision and with the Coast Guard Position {The one they were forced into}.
The Federal Conservatives do not care about the public,But believe me they will care at election time,This may not be a big issue in two years but it could be if a near tragedy /or tragedy occurs us public will not forget how we were Treated by the Harper Government, you know our dictatorship of a government.

I thought that 11 minutes was a good response time, the police boat, the coast guard, and the north shore rescue were there, that seemed adequate in my books. What about the owner are they contributing to this cost? Should they have rescue insurance ,( can you get this ) maybe then people would make sure to have the gas tank full, ensure that boats was tied off correctly, and not take unnecessary risks when out on the water

Wayne I did reply to you twice but NW obviously doesn't like my response.

The fact is that I have NO VESTED INTEREST. I just don't like government waste and it seems to me by your comments that you are the one that is espousing a particular party, not me.

Traza I agree that 11 minutes is an appropriate response time.

Wayne I am hoping this gets past NW's censors because I would like you to tell me if you know of any boating incidents where lives were either saved or lost due directly to the response of the Jericho assets. I think you'll find that the CG responds with the nearest vessel regardless of the location or where it's dispatched from.
