Traffic patterns still developing on toll bridges

BC’s Transportation Minister says it's going to take time for new traffic patterns to take hold now that the new Port Mann Bridge has been open for three months.

Translink has reported the Golden Ears hasn't seen much increase in volume, as it said it would, with the new Surrey-Coquitlam tolled route.

Mary Polak says it's tough to say why, adding new traffic patterns take months to develop.

"I know Translink is disappointed that the bridge they operate hasn't performed in terms of their revenues, and one would hope that that would improve over time."

Translink has said the Golden Ears has seen about forty-thousand weekday trips so far this year.

The bridge's revenue was down about thirty-eight million dollars as of last September.

LOWER THE TOLLS! it's like the idiots running BC Ferries who figure the best way to increase revenues is to increase fares. If you make it more affordable, more people will use it. 100 cars paying $4 = $400, 1000 cars paying $1 = $1000! Hello? Anybody home?

I live in Walnut Grove. If I want to go see my GrandMother by Coquitlam Centre I have 2 options. Golden Ears bridge for $4 or so per crossing, or Port Mann for $1.50 per crossing. Gee, I can't quite see why the Golden Ears bridge has so few travellers? Maybe if Translink paid some consulting firm 1 million or so of our money, they might be able to figure it out.

@SpiltB quick start a consulting firm focused on toll bridges. Of course the toll will still have to stay at $3 to cover your fee, but what the hell.

@SpiltB Ahhh Finally someone who gets it !!! Geeeez I have 20 free crossings x 2 vehicles ,,,hmmmm guess which bridge I will use ,,, then it is $1.50 ,,, People of the Coquitlam , Maple Ridge area are getting screwed ,,, I know I helped pay for the Alex Fraser , the Sea to Sky etc etc Plus I don't really have easy access to the cheap U.S. gas the South Surrey/ Delta folks do ?? Then you have gov that steals from ICBC every year ,,, I will eat ,y hat if the Libs' get in ,,,not all Ms. Clarks fault ,,,there are lot of egomaniacs in that group.

bctaxpayer: You are not the sharpest in your commentaries either. Get Ken280, the readers consultant, a man with a briefcase, 50 miles away from home to help you.
Notice that he reprimanded you in a recent comment.
Are the two of you not seeing eye to eye anymore?

@joes_2868 Ken doesn't see eye to eye with anyone...he's always looking in his briefcase.

The main idea should be to move people not vehicles!! All bridges and tunnels should charge a toll of $1.00 each direction!! Fare Zones through out the GVRD should be $1.00 per zone!! The Sea to Sky highway should have a toll of $1.00 each way to Squamish and then $10.00 Squamish to Whistler return!! These tolls would pay for all maintenance and updating of the total transit system!! The Port Mann bridge should have been built with a lower level for Light Rail that could go on grade out to Chilliwack!! The Evergreen Line should be built to the east side of Maple Ridge!! The Expo Line should be continued on grade to Langley and White Rock!! The Millennium Line should be built through to UBC!! The Canada Line should be built on grade and Bridge to Tsawwassen, Ladner & Ferry Terminal

@JimN Great idea But the corrupt BC lie berals re tooooooo stupid to understand.

@JimN No government would ever agree with that. It makes since. Same reason they laughed at Mel Hurtig and The National Party in 1993 when they suggested a flat income tax across the board.

I think it was around 12-13% on any income. If you made a dollar or a million, you paid 13%. No business taxes, no deductions, just a flat tax. That would've been the only tax required to cover the national debt and operating costs, including medical, ferries, fuel taxes, and other user fees. After a few years, it would've possibly dropped once the debt was paid off.

Yes, another simple idea that was shot down because it made since, and it was just too damned easy.

    Port Tax Bridge 3 billion

All the people that supported the Olympics have no right to bitch. I did not support the Olympics by the way. We are NOT some rich little country like the govt pretends we are.
