Budget's out, but Dix still tight-lipped on when NDP will release platform

2/20/2013

NDP leader Adrian Dix still won't say when he's going to release his election platform.

Dix is criticizing yesterday's budget for cutting health care spending and raising MSP premiums by four percent, but he won't say if he'd reverse those decisions.

"We're going to have to make some difficult choices based on, frankly, the mismanagement we've seen in recent years, and so we're going to have to say precisely on all those questions and we will and i think it's not unreasonable for us to review what's in this document now and to make those decisions."

Dix has said he's already announced more policies than previous leaders this far in advance of an election.

    manufactured crisis/issue?
The BC Liberals have had almost 12 years to wreck this province. Dix is totally within his rights to wait a little more until closer to the election to release the NDP's platform. Voters will have enough time to digest the NDP's agenda, and judge the Liberal's record.

@PeterK_18 The Liberals are running out of ideas and love to steal them from the NDP!,Hold on to the release as long as you have too! Then let us please have a debate on the issues, not have Liberal no shows in the debates like in the last 3 elections or a fixed election debates by media where the Premier of BC will not answer the questions and gets a media pass for doing it!. Go NDP Go

@PeterK_18 The NDP had their time of destruction in the 90's and they are NOT a viable option to take the fiberals place. The BC Conservatives are the only viable option as they are willing to make real changes as opposed to the status quo. 20+ years of ndp/fiberal ruin is more than enough.

Last year he said he had a budget ready, but we never saw it. But, he did say he will have to say he will have to be precise, so I look forward to hearing it.

So the budget has been out for one day and people are expecting the NDP to release a counter budget. Really?

They need to go over this thing with a fine tooth comb so they can find all of the little nooks and crannies where the BC Liberals may have hidden who knows what where.

As Martyn Brown, chief of staff to former premier Gordon Campbell said it is a terrible budget. Although, I was surprised that he mentioned that we have to start having realistic conversations about taxes in this province and country as government revenues are shrinking and cannot solely rely on the natural resource sectors to bankroll governments forever. He also believes it will not see the light of day even if the BC Liberals are re-elected 'They’re going to have to introduce a new budget. All the assumptions will be re-evaluated in May and all of the spending will be re-evaluated in May. So really, this is a lot to do about nothing.”

I think the BC Liberals are hoping to snag some support from the NDP with this budget...tax increases? Mr. Brown was asked what he thought would be the reaction if this was an NDP budget and he said the BC Liberals would be jumping all over them for hiking taxes and scaring away business and ruining the economy...hhhmmm....how things have changed!

This batch of NDP actually seem a little different, smarter and removed from the NDP of the 90's maybe they've learned a thing or two over the past twelve years. Let's hope so as we do need a change in government. The BC Liberals need to take a short vacation...

@WizardOron The NDP clearly have a hidden agenda and they are scared voters will find out. Either that or the NDP are as clueless as before.

@WizardOron You have to remeber they are not going to say or do anything that will hurt their lead but behind the scenses they have the same old supporters: BC Fed of Labour, BC Nurses, BCTF, etc. As their contracts come due they are going to expect something in return for their support and that is when you will see the same old NDP. Good thing the teachers contract is due this year, we can then really see Risky Dixy true colours.

WizardOron: Yeah right, so in 2017, another coalition government is elected to clean up the mess of Adrian Dix.

@joes_2868 Thumper it will take longer to clean the mess of these Liberals/Cons of the coalition! when the people see what has happen from 01-13 by that time, you will be rooting for the Con/Liberals of the coalition and ranting remember the 90's. Boy will we have the goods on your crooked team! haha! Go NDP Go

@joes_2868 Keep in mind that we have election every 4 years so that the electorate can re-evaluate elected officials. A benefit to a change of political parties is that the new party in power will have a good look at the behaviour of its predecessor; this keeps parties honest.

So a change is always good.

Adrian Dix is doing what he said he would do.......wait for the budget and review before declaring the NDP position. He announced long ago that he will not rush into things without knowing the budget, he would not raise expectations before knowing he could deliver on promises. He has put a new face on the NDP - slow and cautious.

Mr. Dix has been handed a can of worms. It is hard to take seriously a budget that depends on a fire sale of assets to "balance" it. Because the government has pleaded poverty and stolen part of his election platform (the tax on high income earners and the 2 point increase in corporate taxes), he is left little manouverability.

Furthermore, there is no assurance that the just-introduced budget is representative of the Liberal election platform or, for that matter, the plan for 2013/14 and beyond. It is a safe bet that their platform and 2013/14 plan will respond-and change-immediately to anything the NDP advocates. In this sense, it supports the perception that the so-called 2013/14 Liberal budget is no more credible than the 2009/10 budget.

So, Mr. Dix is wise to hold off on committing himself to an election platform until the Liberals really come clean with their promises and plans. At any rate, wait until the writ is dropped.

It is hardly a surprise that the NDP is uncertain as to when it will balance the finances of the province. Consider that the Liberals, contrary to a "balanced budget law," have failed to balance the province's finances for 4 years straight despite receiving a windfall of $1.6 billion gift (HST transition funding).

      @insite NDP . . . balance a budget . . . laughable.
No where on the Planet do "Socialists" balance budgets.
We had NO Balanced budgets in the 90's . . .
What Dix and company will do . . . is attempt to Spend up To Prosperity . . . Have you ever done that Insite?
The NDP will tax the rich . . . Rich being ANYONE WITH AN EARNED INCOME . . .
When will the NDP Balance the Budget . . . the first week of NEVER ! ! !
  8. commonsense posted on 02/21/2013 09:42 AM
Dix has already put down the budget, but with zero comments why or what to do. Whatever. I expected that.

However, he has zero intention on balancing the books, plans to spend more, so he attends to add more to the debt. Both recorded and contractual debt will increase. So we complain that the budget blows or whatever, the government should balance the books and not add to the debt, but we won't be receiving a balanced budget nor a debt-free budget from Dix either.
    1. insite posted on 02/21/2013 02:09 PM
@commonsense Finally, there is a notion put forth that neither the Liberals or NDP can balance the budget given the externalties largely beyond a provincial government's control.

Commodity demand and prices, $Cdn exchange rate, interest rates. condition of global economy, energy prices, political instability, etc have a greater effect on the BC economy than a government or its fiscal policies.

If only the Liberals can best grow the economy and better manage the provincial treasury, then there would be have been no revenue shortfalls and our budgets would have been balanced every year since 2001. The myth that only the NDP raises taxes, fees, premiums and rates(electricity) has been blown out of the water.

The sad reality is that BC regularly inccured a deficit over the past decade despite a $1 billion BC Rail sale, a not-so-revenue-neutral HST, a $1.6 billion HST transition fund and now a $800 million asset sale.

Fewer jobs (321,000) were created in the 2000s than in the 1990s (375,000 jobs). The GDP grew faster in the 1990s than in the 2000s.Check this out on Business Council of BC website.

So, it is a saw-off as to which party and leader is better fit to lead the province going forward.

In the end, the voter will decide. Perhaps, the relevant issues will distill down to that of leadership, trust, credibility and truthfullness.

Taxpayers in Nova Scotia voted in for the first time in their provincial history a NDP government.
That was in 2009 and the NDP are due to call an election, but are a bit scared to because the result will be voted back to opposition status.
Here are some of the comments from your fellow taxpayers in NDP Nova Scotia, which Ken280, the readers consultant with a briefcase 50 miles away home and bctaxpayer would agree to.

THEY SAY NDP MEANS "NEARLY DEAD PROVINCE" BROUGHT TO YOU BY DARRELL DEXTER.

THE NDP HAS BEEN AN EXPERIMENTAL GOVERNMENT.

THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING IT SEEMS, OTHER THAN DOLE OUT MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE.

PAY RAISES TO A BLOATED PUBLIC SERVICE, UNABLE TO ADDRESS ELECTION PROMISES AND MASSIVE CORPORATE BAILOUTS ALL WITH BORROWED MONEY.

Now for all you NDP supporters, if the NDP is elected government, in 2017, you will all be using the above phrases in the province of B.C.

Bruce Ralston really thinks that B.C. taxpayers were born yesterday.
In the legislature talking about the budget, Bruce says that a increase in MSP premiums will be more expense for employers that pay these premiums as a benefit on behalf of the employee.
He forgot to mention that employee benefits is a business expense deduction and that the employee has to pay income tax on this MSP premium as a taxable benefit on their pay cheque, as per Canada Revenue Agency laws.
Ralston is a lawyer, brain wise, not much up their!
This is what you call a minister of finance if the NDP won government.
This guy would do major facial damage if he was ever to crack a smile.

MichaelD_10 : And a self-acknowledged MILF whose policies are all over the place and who has run out of bandaids is morally fit to run the province? She who has all the retread Campbell people leaving like rats leaving the proverbial sinking ship? And others leaving to sit as inependants or going to the Conservative Party like fleas jumping from the back of a drowning rat? She who surrounds herself with Harperites to direct her and to keep her from the scrums? She who didn't have the nerve to have a fall sitting of the Legislature? She who keeps cutting the poor and disadvantaged off at the knees by continually cutting projects and funding? She who can only hope that people will vote for her and her party on 'promises' somewhere in the future ( 2015, maybe 2020, maybe....). She who didn't jump into the fray about the Northern Gateway Pipeline until public opinion was saying she was again losing credibility? She who went on to talk to Albertas Premier Redford with what she knew Redford would turn down...hoping to make herself look tough and strong when she just looked like a Johnny-Come-Lately to the party whining for what she (belatedly) felt BC should have from the deal. She who gives off signals to the likes of Sir Richard Branson so that he made an inappropriate offer to go nude skidooing with him. She is a huge Fail on so many fronts. And the leftovers from Campbells days who stuck it out with her. And you compare Adrians record against Christy and the Liberals and before that Campbell? Give me a break !!! We need a fresh clean sweep and the NDP will deliver it.
