The group pushing to increase labour based tax incentives for BC’s film industry is meeting with Culture Minister Bill Bennett on Thursday.

Still, despite the meeting, Wayne Bennett with Save BC Film says no assurances have been given about any goodies for BC's film industry showing up in this week's provincial budget.

"Within the throne speech that happened last week, there was no indication of any kind of relief or assistance, so I highly doubt that there'll be anything in the budget. We're just going to continue to keep working and educate everybody and hopefully after the budget comes out, we can continue to encourage them to work with us."

Wayne Bennett says he hopes to carry the momentum from this month's Mustel poll into this week's talks.

That poll indicated over 80 percent of British Columbians would support some form of tax incentives for the film industry.

I wonder how many would support tax incentives if they knew it would mean raising the amount of tax they already pay! I'm sure you would see a greatly reduced percentage! Many other "hurting" businesses don't get any tax relief and have many people on their payroll.

@CosmicS You make a good point however the TV?Film Industry also contribute almost $20 billion to the economy. If we value a growing economy sometimes incentives must be offered to remain competitive with other jurisdictions.

Also, tens of thousands of people are no longer working because TV?film work has all but dried up in BC.

When the NDP introduced a tax credit for this industry back in the 1990's if I remember correctly TV/Film contributed under $1 billion to the economy. And yes it was the NDP who helped keep and kick off this industry in BC...believe it or not!

It is a worthwhile investment. Thinking outside the box may be required and the film industry does understand the economics of the situation and are not asking for a lot just a fairly even playing field.

For instance in other provinces TV and Film are PST exempt industries but NOT here in BC.

BC is already shedding people and jobs regardless of what the governments advertisements and jobs plans otherwise state especially, young university educated people...no jobs and cost of living too high!

We finally got back to a balanced budget but these people seems to want us to go back into deficit just so they can get a tax break. If they don't want to go into deficit then what sector of the economy are we supposed to take money from in order to give it to them?

@DavidSB As of today 18/02/2013 I don’t see a balanced budget and I’m not holding my breath that I’ll see one tomorrow

It is a tax rebate program. The industry has to spend the money before it gets anything back. No spend - no rebate. It DOES NOT cost taxpayers a dime.
