Leaked documents show Liberals plan more election ad spending

The NDP says a leaked government document shows the Liberals are planning to spend more money on advertising in the lead-up to the spring election than previously disclosed.

Opposition leader Adrian Dix says the document that was presented to the Liberal caucus last month outlines 16.6 million dollars in Jobs Plan advertising, up from the previous estimate of 15 million.

"The purpose of the campaign according to the government document is to help quote decrease the credibility gap of the government.  16.4 million, yes it's an ambitious goal Mr. Speaker."

But Premier Christy Clark defends the commercials, saying they are directing people to the BC Jobs Plan Facebook site.

"As a result of some of the work that we've been doing, over a million people have gone to visit the Facebook site and that Facebook site is there to connect people with jobs."

The Liberals say they're still spending less on advertising than the NDP did in the 1990's.

This is one area that is really close to my heart. And you know what. The BC Jobs plan FB site has gotten busier since the ads started running. At times perhaps taxing the office full of Govt employees from the ministry of Government Communications and Public Engagement to the point where they banned a facebook follower in November who was reposting BC JOBS Plan posts in mandarin so that the Chinese Miners in Tumbler Ridge could read the posts too.
Who is on the BC Jobs Plan Facebook Page?
Candace the Electrician is defending the Govt for giving her her trade.
A lot of older men who cant find work because there is no help for them to find work .
And a handful of Liberal trolls telling the unemployed who cant find work to "go to school and start with kindergarten"

Has Christys ads and facebook page got me a job? Nope. Will it ever? hah dont think so. Its all just a big smoke screen just like a twobit magic show.

@UnemployedinBC Governments don't hand out jobs. They only make the best environment for business who do hire. Then we come along and picket, demonstrate and hug trees to make it even harder.
Your job is to go get your own job.

It seems like the 2 main political parties in this Province complain about each other doing what they themselves have done......... a pox on both their houses.

@WilliamS_3961 You are right - we need a viable 3rd party - and for a while it looked like we might have one - but then Cummins rolled his wheelchair into the room and spoiled the party

It's great that the FB page is getting so many visitors but that is not the point that NDP are trying to make here. This is partisan advertising, end of story. This government criticized such advertising when Campbell was premier but but now they're childish response is "if the NDP did it, so can we".

One important note on the advertising dollars that the Liberals claim were spent by the NDP is that not all of it was as partisan as what the Liberals are doing today. What numbers are the BC Liberals looking at? Tourism BC advertising, BC Parks advertising, what numbers are BC Liberals using?

This is not necessarily bad spending however it does smack of political advertising on the taxpayer dime, money taken out of a contingency fund set up by the BC Liberals in case of an emergency and this type of advertising in my kind does not constitute an emergency. In addition, the figures used are misleading if not outright false. BC is not leading Canada in job growth or job creation. BC has been put on watch by a credit agency because the debt is fast approaching an unsustainable number. Lowest taxes mean nothing when the budget has been more in the red than the black over the past twelve years, only five balanced budgets that have only come from BC Hydro deferring its own debt by decades if not longer.

Lastly, this government has always maintained itself to be of higher caliber than any other before it yet they then use the spending of a government they once condemned of doing this very same thing as an example of why this type of spending is okay.

That’s ok its just 1.6 million dollars over the original estimate of 15 million dollars. We the tax payers are just a bottomless pit of money to the BC Liberals. I’m sure there’s some assets that belongs to the province of BC the Liberals can sell off to cover the 16.6 million dollars… boy I’m sure glad they aren’t spending that money on something stupid like healthcare, education or maybe are seniors citizens

I have no problem spending money on advertising as long as it's a party's money, and not public funds. My concern is that the amount of money paid to the media may influence their editorial department - after all who wants to lose the advertising revenue?

Has anybody else read the article in the G&M about the Pacific Carbon Trust: "GREEN ECONOMY Public pays huge markup for carbon offsets, records show".

Terry Lake mentions that perhaps they can use the surplus from this fund that is robbing the public sector blind to pay down the debt now that people are being critical of it. Another great example of how the BC Liberals do not know how to manage the provincial coffers.

Dangling political carrots in front of noses about how decades from now they might be able to eliminate the PST so can become like Alberta, solely reliant on natural resources and the boom and bust cycle that now has Alberta $6 billion in the red.

Let's see what else they're doing, selling off provincial assets that WAC Bennett set up for the people of the province and our benefit. But the great Liberals that have limited revenues coming in decide to sell them all off so they can balance the budget and look good. oh, and let's get BC Hydro to buy surplus power and double the going rate so that when we need the private run or river power suppliers are there for when we need it and then BC Hydro just might make that billion plus dollars back--another hypothetical like the trillion dollar LNG boom they are "conservatively" predicting will come to the province but only if they are elected government. Let's not forget that.

And what are they going to do between now and the predicted LNG Boom? Are we just going to ride it out and wait, no plans for the necxt 7 to 10 years?

Every political party in power does it, the Liberals and the NDP. They are both guilty of it., so can't really point fingers at each other like a bunch of little kids.
