As Abbotsford looks at whether or not to adopt Insite style harm reduction, city police say they support the public forums but will stay out of the decision making process.

Constable Ian MacDonald says they want to be firmly in the background as best options are discussed.

"We will be guided by the decisions of the community city council and health officials. Certainly we have taken into account the possibility that because one of the prominent issues that has been forwarded with harm reduction discussions is clean needles that we will be prepared as a police department and do our job and ensure public safety."

MacDonald says addiction issues play a role in criminal behaviour especially where it concerns property crime.

The City of Abbotsford will hold two public forums on harm reduction on January 22nd and 29th.

@rightwingnut You have a narrow minded view.

These are people, who have been marginalized in life due
to vulnerable home environments and/or mental health
      problems left untreated.

Think of yourself as fortunate, you have never been in such
      a position.

I have seen first hand what addictions do to a neighborhood,
    in terms of drug-related crime.

Harm redution is a valuable tool to connect with the addicted
and help them deal with their addictions, but, also, protect
their health and the health of the community and reduce
    crime in our neighborhoods.

This so-called "harm-reduction" is nothing but enabling drug users. Get them into treatment and off drugs. Let's not continue to feed their dependency on drugs. This province needs more treatment facilities. The result would be a decrease in property crime. My home was broken into a few years ago, and they stole a few things they could easily sell on the street for drugs. We need to help these drug addicts, not support their habit.

Um, your story is wrong. Abbotsford is looking at needle exchange, not supervised injection, like Insite. It's just completely wrong to say they're thinking about an "Insite approach."

Look, the mayor says right that " a supervised injection site is absolutely not an option":

time for some tough love. build a treatment facility and send these addicts there for 1 year to get clean. if after coming out they continue to do drugs , put them back for 2 years . if after a 2 year treatment and they still continue to do drugs , bye bye for life. they are of no use to society if they insist on doing drugs after 2 treatments so get them off the streets for good.
