BCGEU Strike

9/5/2012

Today is the day.

27-thousand government workers hit the bricks for a one day strike -- in their campaign for higher wages.

Members of the b-c government and service employees' union are joined today by members of the professional employees association and members of cope local 378, which represents ICBC workers.

More than 17-hundred worksites are affected by the strike -- that includes commercial vehicle inspections, government agencies, courts, corrections, and social work.

And, liquor stores -- warehouse and retail workers are not working.

Some branches of ICBC that are connected to service BC offices are closed -- claim centres are operating.

Essential service levels do have to be maintained in each sector the BCGEU has members.

    Good luck union members!
    I hope you get everything you are asking for from the greedy, corrupt government that we are stuck with for a short while to go.

    I too say good luck union members. Don't hold your breath though. Contrary to michael_4092 statement, another goernment (NDP) wont be any better. In fact, as all their past history shows, they are at least as greedy and at the same time WILL take this province from the current credit rating (that the Liberals have positioned us) afforded us down to something unacceptable.
    Want wage increases to at least match the cost of living? Guess what public sector unions, you already make very good wages and have (in most cases) benefits that are much better than most others.
    When will the public sector and the BCTF understand what is going on? You need to be realistic and see what the actions of your unions are creating amongst the rest of the non public sector union people of BC. It is their pockets that your unions hand is in. Get it out now!

      @Chuck M Umm, nooooo they don't.

      After 20 years, I make less than $20 per hour thank you very much.
      I also get 50 % coverage for dental and medical and my prescriptions.
      Is that better than most others?
      Nope.

    ICBC Managers and Execs receive huge increases in pay and bonuses and so do the members of the Liberal government. The same government takes millions of profits from ICBC and when the union members ask for a 3.5 percent raise and a cost of living increase they become the bad guys. What the???? The public should be more concerned about management and execs of ICBC, Translink, Government officials etc... receiving up to 20% increases.

      @JL_4142 Completely agree!
      I have never had a bonus in 20 years. Bonus? LOL.
      I take a decrease in wages every single year that there is inflation or cost of living increase. My last wage increase of 40 cents per hour was in 2007.
      NICE!
      Thanks Christy!

      @JL_4142 Bosses, managers, and executives have always made more money and received perks - public or private. And so they should. They have much more responsibility. But that has nothing to do with the argument of striking workers.

    I don't understand why so many comments agree with the union. Firstly, it was the first NDP government in B.C. that made government workers union. There are so many comments against the government about pay raises. Did some of you forget it is you the taxpayer that is the employer. Elected governments are only the management every four years. Sure give them everything the workers want but do not once say a word about an increase in taxes. Both Manitoba and Nova Scotia have NDP governments. The government workers in Manitoba accepted the government wage offer in a four year contract from Jan 1, 2011 to Dec 31, 2014 which gave them zero wage increase in 2011, zero wage increase in 2012, 2.7% in 2013 and 2.7% in 2014. The government workers in Nova Scotia were forced into a signed contract with the Nova Scotia NDP government. They forced them into 2 year contract with a 1% raise in 2011 and a 1% raise in 2012. NOTE: A NDP GOVERNMENT FORCING A CONTRACT ONTO UNION EMPLOYEES! The B.C. government employees have been offered a 2.5% in the first year and 1.5% in the second year of a two year contract. The union wants 3.5% in the first year and a cost of living in the second year. It is amazing that they cannot write a cheque to the doctor if they have a terminal disease. Money won't do the trick. Also note, how many of us non government workers at sometime end up with a layoff slip for employment insurance. Ever hear of a government worker getting a layoff slip. Go to the website and just look at some of the wage rates these workers get now even without a raise and also look at their extended benefits plan. The NDP premier of Nova Scotia told his government employees that the world is in a economic crises and someday it will turn around but in the meantime live with it and be paitient and not GREEDY.

      @joes_2868 Good article but you know there are none so blind as those that do not want to see.
      People will vote with their hearts not their heads. Scary!!!
      They walk among us and they vote.

    Greedy Corrupt Government may not be what any of us want, but remember that any government employee is paid for by you and I. If you can afford to pay more taxes, or suffer less services, then by all means support higher wage demands and better benefits for all. If you have a hard time making ends meet, get the cold shoulder with most of your requests for service from these same employees, then maybe a greedy corrupt government saying "No" is the better branch of the dilema.

      @RichardF_4221 And all MLA’s are paid by you by taxes also along with their yearly based on inflation raise along with their gold plated pensions and NO government employee or any buddy in the private sector will see anything near that good

    Who is truly inconvenienced by today's strike? Not anyone who drinks...there's beer & wine on every corner that doesn't have a Starbucks or a 7-11. Not ICBC customers. No-one who has to pay a bill, banks work, internet works.
    I guess the only ones with a problem would be those that didn't renew their license until the last moment.
