Two teenage girls are in police custody after a stabbing rampage on Skytrain last night.

Transit police spokeswoman Anne Drennan says she's never heard anything quite like this.

She says around 11:30 p.m., a 14- and 15-year-old girl first confronted two women at the Gateway station in Surrey, one of them slashing one woman's arm.

"The two suspects (then) got on a northbound train and confronted a woman on the train, threatening her with an 8-inch, serrated steak knife, and stabbing a train seat."

Drennan says the girls exited at Columbia Station, followed this woman, and then punched her in the face.

Finally, they rode to Joyce Station and stabbed a man holding a pizza box.  They ran off from the station, but were arrested.

Drennan says they now face a litany of charges, including assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon, and are known to police.

It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs was a factor.

Drennan says the girls from Vancouver are part of a loosely knit  group of young people who carry out crime along the Skytrain system -- and have had 142 contacts with police going back to January 2012.

"It's extremely concerning that we're dealing with kids who are 14 and  15 and you have to ask what are they doing out that late at night.

Drennan says the girls were  involved in numerous cell phone robberies last year - also along Skytrain.

The kicker is that the little darlings are "known to the police"

Expect great things from these two !!

good thing we have transit police....oh wait, I bet none were around this time either! they managed to travel to three different stations, actually get off at Columbia, accost a woman, then get back on and make it all the way to Joyce, WTF WTF transit cops, WTF!

When trains are running peak service, it takes a good 20 min to get from Gateway to Joyce. Now let's take into account these little scumbags assaults, disembarking trains, following people, getting back on, all at night when there is much slower service. Can we make a modest estimate at 30-40 min for their reign of terror? again, way to go transit cops!

@lg_3045 It is NOT SAFE to ride the skytrain after 9:00 pm AT ALL!!! These people will be back and I don't want to be their next victim. Why aren't there police at every station after 9:00 pm and on the skytrain cars more after this time?

I would like to know which police agency made the arrest, please.

The Transit police are a total waste of money, as they can only travel as fast as transit moves. Time to have a special team of officers in each jurisdiction that unites, like drug units, traffic units, there would be a transit unit.

It seems to me the only time I see transit cops are when they they are checking peoples tickets. A good example is at the Lougheed sky-train station where sometimes there will be groups of 4 to 6 transit cops at the top of the escalator . ?

@lindsaym_7673 I totally agree with you. The only time I see them, they are standing in groups talking, or on their phones.
Wouldn't we all like to make a hundred grand a year to check tickets and chat!!

And to think these criminals exited at the Columbia station, which is just a block from the transit police head office!

Transit police dispatchers do NOT take 911 calls. Yet are the highest paid dispatchers in BC. Time to move them to ECOM, just like Burnaby is doing with their dispatchers. We would save TWO MILLION dollars a year, just by doing that!

I would like to know which City the 911 call was routed to, and I would also like to know which Cities officers made the arrest.

VPD should take over the Transit cops, that is where the volume of transit is and those boys do a good job, and can get to the calls.

Random unprovoked stabbing sprees seem to be on the rise, with this one and the recent one in the West End. This kind of violent unprovoked attack is likely precipitated by the use of methamphetamine, the most psychologically and physically destructive drug in existence, or by "bath salts", also known as MDPV, which is a legal chemical analogue and produces similar effects.

perhaps a 10:00 pm curfew for juveniles might help.

I'm sure they'll be told not to do it again and be promptly released. Great system we have in this country. Time to get rid of the young offenders act.

I'M GOING TO SAY THAT VIOLENCE & CRIME IS NOT RANDOM IN OUR CITY. I UNFORTUNATELY HAVE TO RELY ON TRANSIT/SKYTRAIN BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO DRIVE.
I DO NOT FEEL SAFE RIDING SKYTRAIN ESPECIALLY AFTER 9:00 PM. THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE POLICE AT ALL STATIONS ESPECIALLY AFTER 9;00 PM. IT IS QUITE COMMON TO BE THE ONLY PERSON ON THE SKYTRAIN CAR AFTER 9:00 PM, THEN A GROUP OF SCARY INDIVIDUALS GET ON AND THERE IS NOWHERE TO GO UNTIL THE NEXT STATION THAT'S IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN ASSAULTED FIRST WHILE YOU ARE STUCK WITH NO PROTECTION FROM ANY POLICE ANYWHERE.
NOT SAFE TO BE ON SKYTRAIN AT ALL. NOT A RANDOM ACT OF VIOLENCE EITHER.
