NDP leader has plan to get young people voting

NDP leader Adrian Dix has a new idea to get more young people voting.

He says he plans to table a bill on Monday to allow teens to register to vote at a younger age.

He says the voting age of 18 would stay the same, but kids could start simply registering to cast a ballot starting at 16 years old.

"Just a practical change that will ensure young people -- we take away some of the barriers to young people voting."

He says the Chief Electoral Officer in BC recommended this two years ago.

    A good idea.
I also think that beginning in grade 10, political science should be taught as part of the regular curriculum for every student in BC.
    The basics of policy.
How a bill works its way through the Legislature and Parliament.
What the basic ideals of each party are.
Set aside the controversial stuff about who did what to who, and just get to the basics of "this is what the NDP offers you", "this is what the Conservatives offer you", this is what the Green Party offers you" etc.
I think a big reason a large number of youth, as well as adults, don't vote is the crap that gets tossed around constantly.
Trying to alleviate the temptation to say "politicians are just in it for themselves" is important to grow our electorate that actually casts a ballot.

@RichardF_4221 This was around for a very long time and the Liberals?Cons of the coalition did everything to down play the significant of a change. The argument from the right wing is that Kids are too stupid and will be ripe for Coercion from parents! Well so what they need to learn how the political system works,Seeing that most youth are smarter than you think and can tell when someone is feeding them BS and most will in BC vote for the NDP that favors the little guy, homelessness green initiatives to protect the environment,I think it will be a good idea for all B.C.-ers.We have raised some very Intelligent youth here in our province, the best part is the low income youth will finally see they have a voice! Go NDP Go

Too bad he didn't think of this sooner. There's no way there would be time to pass for this time around.

I will never vote NDP, they are the wrong choice for the entire country not just BC... but that aside,

I've said for years that kids should be able to vote at 16. It can be a school project kind of thing in Socials Studies/Humanities that they research the parties and vote how they like, but the entire class can go vote.

Whoever these kids vote for in high school will still be in power when they graduate so they should have a say.

@AndreaK_5056 You are kidding , right ? The teachers would be working overtime to brainwash every kid into voting NDP !!

The problem isn't necessarily that the people voting aren't young enough (although lowering the voting age to 16 is an interesting idea). The problem is that not enough people (old or young) are voting (voter turn out is often under 50%).

We need to focus on ways to increase voter turn out in general. Even if the age is lowered to 16, the percentage will probably remain consistent with current figures.

In my opinion, none of the current BC political parties or politians would appeal to young people anyway.

@poli_sci101 Apathy at all ages stems from a general disgust and. Distrust of those running for office .
What's the point. Of choosing - they are all just in it to line their pockets !... Heard that one before ??
  6. RichardF_4221 posted on 03/08/2013 02:55 PM
Hey, hit them in the pocket book was my original thought about mandatory voting. If you don't vote, you get fined $ X. Second offence is a little more. Of course many would say that it's their choice and they shouldn't be forced to vote.
So, just like cigarettes and alcohol let's make it a choice taxed item. When you cast your ballot, you get an exemption paper that gives you $100 tax break each year until the next election.
So it's your choice to vote. It's your choice if you want the tax break or not.

AndreaK_5056: Right on as Ken280, would say, the readers consultant, a man with a briefcase 50 miles away home.
That is what the taxpayers in Nova Scotia are going to do in their provincial election. Send the NDP government into opposition status.
The NDP have destroyed Nova Scotia.

no voting until the age of 18. i agree that studends in grades 11 & 12 should be introduced to the ways of canadian government both federal and provincial. as for voter apathy , perhaps votors should have more of a reason to vote instead of just for a candidate of their choice there perhaps should be memorandums like "do you agree to approve the northern pipeline" . "would you like to see png plants on the north coast" "do you think all water crossings in the lower mainland should be tolled". "do you agree on wind power on the coastal waters" anything to attract more votors.
    1. Ken280 posted on 03/08/2013 06:44 PM
@BOBF_5970 Put all that on a ballot and vote for it! MAY, 14, 2013. This would be Democracy? But not for some here! haha Go NDP Go
    2. Garp posted on 03/08/2013 07:14 PM
@BOBF_5970 that suggestion is impractical and will not work in a democracy; Nothing would get done. The questions you pose should be raised during the election campaign; voters can decide whether the answers are credible.

As to your point on voter apathy our media, needs to do a better job presenting the undercurrent to issues and make them relevant to voters. In that way potential voters will be motivated to participate. As an alternative, we could do what is done in Australia, make voting mandatory and punish people who fail to vote.

What a great idea Adrian. Why did risky Clark not think of this? Too busy with their corruption scandals I guess.

@bctaxpayer there is nothing particularly insightful about Dix idea; not every article should be used as a soapbox
    2. Ron_26 posted on 03/08/2013 07:57 PM
@bctaxpayer This "idea" has been around for decades. Why Dix lays claim to it is rather sad.

    In the 2009 BC Election,
The popular vote standings were Liberals 45.82% / NDP 42.15% / Green 8.10%
Voter turnout was 50.99%. So in reality taking in all the eligible voters, the winning Liberal party actually only got 23.3% of possible votes.
Yes, the winning party in seats and popular vote, got less than 25% of possible ballots. That is the sad part of our low voter turnout. Everyone has an opinion about government, but half the people complaining didn't even bother to vote. People who don't vote, say that they can't influence politics.
If enough non-voters turn out, they could change things and force all politicians to be more responsible to their constituents.
Right now, most MLAs know that at best only 1 in 4 voted for them. So who do they have to please? That 1 in 4, not 2 or 3 of every 4.

Give it up Ken. You a very sick man. PREACHING ONE THING AND DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HIP POCKET.
Like Maude said to Walter, "GOD WILL GET YOU FOR THIS"

"GO NDP GO". I don't think so. Adrian Dix has major explaining to do during the election campaign why the NDP are destroying Manitoba and Nova Scotia.

bctaxpayer: Just like the NDP are saying, no to a improvement to the George Massey Tunnel. NDP say paint it.
Amazing that the NDP are completely lost and not knowing how to bring out a NDP policy platform to let the voters view their intentions.

The voters do know that if Adrian Dix wins government, he will be second in charge reporting to Jim SinClair who will have to approve all government decisions, which Ken280, the readers consultant, a man with a briefcase 50 miles away from home always preaches. Never practices it though.

Everybody does realize the article says "registering at 16" and "not changing the voting age of 18" right.

Seems to be a few comments here that think you'll be getting your L for driving and your first ballot the same day.

Does the Chief Electoral Officer have children?
    Teenagers? 16 yr olds specifically????
hahahaha - did not think so.......cos he would NEVER even go there

PS - he may have some - but doubt he spent any real time with them
ALTHOUGH - at 16 they do know EVERYTHING!!!!

what a waste of Chief Electoral's time and everyone elses!!!
The NDP has plenty of time to brainwash them after 18......
