A provincial court judge in Richmond has sentenced a minor hockey coach who assaulted a player last year to 15 days in jail.
Martin Tremblay was hoping for a suspended sentence and maybe a fine.

But judge Patrick Chen says society must send a strong message society will not tolerate the assault of children by adults.

The 15 days, to be served intermittently on weekends, are a harsher penalty than requested by the crown, who was willing to accept 30 days community service.

Tremblay must also serve 12 months probation for what the judge called a "cowardly sucker punch" when he tripped the 13 year old boy who sprained his wrist when he fell to the ice.

If he was Native he would have been given an apology and financial compensation instead of jail.

@Specimen Yarp if he was RCMP he would have been given this and a latte to go

he deserves more....he broke the boys wrist due to his inability to be an adult.
How on earth was he ever allowed to be a hockey coach? Opps its BC if you have a disability to to the front of the line while others pay for you!

At least it wasn't a suspended sentence or house arrest. Maybe some judges are getting it, even if some crown counsel aren't. Still, I would have liked to see 3 months in jail - it was an assault causing bodily harm on a child by a grown man, and not much of a man.

@SlimP_9860 Precisely, "...not much of a man"

15 days is a joke. should've been 30-90 at least. At least with a criminal record he won't pass the check to coach or work with kids again.

@RichardF_4221 Cross the border, get job offers and so on. 15 isn't enough, but I am glad he was sent to jail. He was expecting a short house arrest, which really does not teach you anything.

How do we get this judge's case load shifted so he can rule on the rest of the Stanley Cup rioters ?
Imagine- a Judge who hands out a stiffer sentence than the Prosector asked for !!
